Hi guys! Been a long time since I posted here. I have a '02 Vette that I started having trouble with the fuel guages, HUD and the needle. When I start the car the guages seems to randomly pick a level and never move until i restart the car. I once drove from Fayetteville, AR to McAllister, OK and the guage stayed on 7/8ths the whole way there. Stopped to get something to eat and when I started the car again the guage was on E! So after procrastinating for a few months I took it to the local Chevrolet dealership yesterday with an almost full tank. They worked on it for about an hour, called me and told me I needed to drive it to get the fuel out of it. When I questioned why I needed to burn all my fuel out of the tank so they can work on it, they then said I needed a new fuel sending unit and a new fuel tank. About $1400 or so. They said there was a GM bulletin about a design flaw in the tank that causes the sending unit to malfunction. They said it was common on models '99 to '04. It feels that they are trying to sucker me, especially since they didn't even bother to empty the fuel from the tank. I haven't heard of this problem before. Anyone else heard of this sending unit/fuel tank issue?

Re: Fuel Guage Troubles
I had problems with the fuel send units in both a 98 coupe and a 2005 C6. When the tank would get below 1/2 full it would read empty and scroll a "service fuel system" message on the DIC. It is not uncommon and GM's "fix" is to put in a new unit with the same flawed design.- Top

Re: Fuel Guage Troubles
Paul,
My problem seems to be that the gauges don't really move when I drive the car for decent amount of time. I could have half a tank and drive 200 miles or so and the gauges won't move. And then when I stop and restart the car again, the needle will go straight to E! Not because it thinks its empty, but because its actually almost empty. Also, I don't get any service mesages through my DIC at all. I just don't see how having a new tank installed will solve the problem.
I did, however, find a GM bullettin about the problem you mentioned, Paul.- Top
