This is probably a question that's been asked many times but I'm new. I purchased a restored 1963 SWC last fall. I've driven it less than 200 miles and already have one star on the right front fender from a rock hitting from beneath. I've been told 63s were not undercoated and I'd get a deduct when it's judged. Is this true and, if so, how big a deduct could I expect. I'm having trouble enjoying the car; keep listening for another ding in the paint.

Re: 1963 Undercoating
Millard;
I have no idea as to an undercoating deduct... Personally, I would not do it, regardless. I too have a 63 SWC which somebody painted black on the bottom... just paint , no undercoating.. the stuff which is typically in the engine compartment... I guess they just got carried away! I've driven the car a couple of thousand miles and have never experienced what you have described... a pebble or small rock for that matter being tossed up from underneath should not damage the surface.
I had a C1 a few years back and had the (pressed on) vibration damper let go while I was driving and that did no damage (on that one I was lucky I suspect).
I'm sure you will get a number of other responses from the guys on the board...

Re: 1963 Undercoating
63's had undercoating, but it was limited. Usually just the top of the wheel wells. I would undercoat this area, where your rocks are being kicked up. The deduct, would be 1-2 pts, if any. You will loose more if you paint is cracked. Undercoat just what you need and enjoy driving the car.
