Allens did end up with the big lot of sidepipes that were purchased out of Canada, i believe they have to rework one side though.

      Don:

The two companies that manufacture sidepipes are Allen's and Sweet Thunder. I believe that all of the Corvette parts suppliers buy from one or the other.

      Websites are www.allencorvetteexhaustsystems.com and www.sweet-thunder.com

Both currently manufacture a sidepipe that is similar to the originals in pipe diameter and materials. They both claim to duplicate the OEM sound, but I have not personally heard them, so I cannot verify this for you. They also manufacture sidepipes that are larger in diameter than original; these have less backpressure and a correspondingly lounder sound level. Some would say that this level is ANNOYING or PAINFUL.

Allen's also has a large supply of GM OEM pipes that they will custom fit for you. But the price for the OEM ones are $$$$$$.

You have to decide what is best for you regarding $$ and fit and sound level. Good luck.

This is not criticism of Allen's Exhaust; I fount them to be a pleasure to deal with. But, the 'OEM sounding' side pipes I bought from them do not, IMHO, sound like the originals I have. Much harsher and louder, so I put my originals back on.

The originals don't look complicated; what was GM's secret to the sound?

Go to "sweet thunder.com" on your computer and you will find the description of their products, prices and some testimonials. The sound is close if not right on when installed on my 65/350hp. Allen's under body systems fit really great but can't vouch for their side pipes. Enjoy Bill #20328

Very small inside diameter (1-7/8", which is why they're more restrictive than the standard under-car exhaust), and the Walker tooling that created the pierced perforations in the inner pipe and tuned cavities between the inner and outer pipes.

Has anyone used Sweet Thunder's larger diameter side pipes in conjunction with headers and if so, how much of an increase in sound and performance was there?

              Thanks,

If you are looking for the exact original sound in mid-year sidepipes, you might want to check this:http://www.sweet-thunder.com/corvette_sidepipes_coming_soon.html
