    A O Smith flight judging

I have a 66 A O Smith car and resently had it judged for the first time at Seven Springs. I am diffently no expert but tried to follow the judging manual. It seems to me that the manual describes the st louis car. Is this correct? If so can anyone tell me what I follow in the manual and what I do differently. I lost some points because a perticular item was installed in accordance with the manual and not as Smith would have installed it. Any help would be appreciated !

The judges should have made a note of what the deduction was made for on your judging sheets and at this point I would use the sheets as a guide and ask questions on this board if you don't understand why a deduction was taken.

      Bob,

Can you give some examples on the areas that are different on A O Smith cars? I have an A O Smith 1965 and would like to see where the differences are.

      Thanks,

      John

Examples; yes...complete list of difference; no.

Hood latching hardware is one area of difference in terms of underhood blackout. Some overspray will be seen on the firewall mounted catches + the interconnecting Bowden cable and on the bottom of the hood mounted catches as these parts were in place and loosely masked at St. Louis versus their counterparts at AO Smith (not installed prior to black out).

Plus, AO Smith had a second set of press molding dies for fiberglass body parts and there are minor differences here/there....

Tip: when having your car judged and deductions are taken, you have an opportunity to ask questions during the judges debrief. It's easier/better to question what you don't understand then, than after the fact...

Here, we're kind of guessing about what the judges saw and commented on versus being there and seeing what they saw. Plus, a picture is worth a thousand words...so, you can often ask the judges to show you what they mean and see it on another car at the event...

          Hi Bob
What was the part for which you lost points?
If that is not specified on your sheet, which one of the four areas did it occur and what was the line item?
Perhaps we can extrapolate from that.

After reading the different post I went over the judging sheets. There are 3 items that points were deducted for.

Mechanical #16 - 2 pts for a missing routing clip. The judges told me how to reroute the wire but with all that happened that day I can't remember.

Interior #2 - 1 pt for missing third screw in the weatherstripping

Chassis #4 - 1pt for overspray on the hood latches and release cable

The judges did a great job. they explained each item, however this was my first event and all the explainations got scrambled into one. The notes on the judging sheets are hard to read at times

The Big item was side pipes; which I now know did not come on smith cars. The car had side pipes when I bought it and I was told at that time they where original. I could not find anything in the manual confirming - smith and no side pipes.

                Bob,

The overspray on the hood latches and cable would have been okay for an STL car, but no overspray on AOS cars. AOS did not produce side pipe cars, as they did not have the equipment to notch the birdcage - check the archives for detailed info on side pipe cars and AOS.

                  Yes, Bob.
As Donald mentioned the mysterious Smith related deduction would be the hood hardware blackout.
The Mech and Interior deduction would appear to be universal and not be Body specific.
The routing clip info is in the AIM.
