    Clutch Problems 66 - 427-425HP

    Hi ,
My recently purchased 66 -427 has a clutch that chatters as you engage in either forward or reverse. The engine, clutch, basically everything was replaced when the car was rebuilt about 7 years ago. Unfortunately the car has been a 'trailer-queen', and really has only gone no more than 100 mi. in those years since car was rebuilt. Could it simply be that the car needs some use and that may take the chatter away or am I looking at replacement of the clutch. Adjustment of the clutch seems okay. .Everything else works okay at this point, and I have really only driven it about 2 miles since purchasing it, as I have been checking it over first.

I would say that putting some miles on the car with significant exercising of the clutch will likely cure your problem. In any event, I'd do this before getting into the clutch.

      Larry:

With that small amount of miles on the engine and clutch, I think that you probably have either rusting on the flywheel/pressure plate faces or some contamination like grease or oil on the clutch disc that is causing the chatter.

I suggest that you recheck your clutch adjustment per the Chevrolet Service Manual procedure, and then go out and drive the car and have some fun. Slip the clutch (holeshot?) a few times to help clean off the flywheel and disc faces. I believe things will get much better with some regular driving.

With only a few hundred miles on the new clutch, I almost can't think of a situation where it would require replacement...unless it was constantly being raced or abused.

my 2008 corvette did this for about 500 miles and then the chattering stopped.

Thanks to all of you for your comments. Yes, I plan to drive it a bunch this summer up here in Ontario (we only have from May til early October, eh!)

          Thanks again,
          Larry
