    Lacquer, until Bowling Green in '81.
    My new '78 SA looked like it was painted with a roller.

          Do your homework, it probably came from the factory that way.
          If you would like to use mine as an example you will need to be sure there are 2-4" cracks at each corner's bonding strip.
          Take a course grinding wheel and raggedly grind out the front wheelwell from above the tire all the way forward and find the most nervous, figity, shaky person you know to sloppily apply the striping tape.
          I could go on and on, but, this is probably too much already.
          Some people actually believe that because they are the original owners, that the car is original.
          On the way home from the dealer the kick panels fell off, in a couple of days, the headliner vinyl separated and was lying on the seats.
          The car vapor locked repeatedly and unexpectedly, dealer replaced the fuel line, nothing, then the fuel pump, nothing, then the carb, nothing, another fuel line, nothing, the tank was next on their list (obviously clueless) when I was given an offer for what I paid for it, I gladly dumped it.
          My first new Corvette that I had been planning on for years, the biggest disappointment of my life.

            Hey Paul

            Having said all that by other contributors, I as well can chime in with 78 paint issues for my 78, but if your goal is Top Flight, than study the new paint guidelines. Essentially the goal is to make the finish look like the original finish which means a painter who has the technique to paint a 70's Corvette like it did from the factory...the orange peel type look.

            Original was lacquer but NCRS understands the difficulties and challenges using lacquer so an experienced Corvette paint restorer understands that and should be able to replicate the flaws detailed above. We seldom judge the gaps recognizing they are original so be the judge there.

              Hello;
              A contributing factor is we (Hall Chevrolet, Milwaukee) did not / could not deliver a Corvette in the '70s without doing some paint repair. Often entire cars, 2-3 times. Can't speak for dealers out of the Milwaukee Zone, but certainly the paint issues were not isolated to Milwaukee.

              Don't know if that helps/hurts, but those are the facts.

              So glad there are no paint issues now. (right)
