    Squeaky Exhaust Hangers

After years of restoration work, I finally got baby out on the highway for a shakedown ride today. I forgot how much fun this was! One problem I can't seem to solve is a squeaking noise that I have traced down to the muffler hangers. These are new repro hangers. I tried some belt conditioner and then some lithium grease, which had no effect. I don't recall ever having this problem before. Any ideas besides installing side exhaust?

Surely your problem can't be all that unusual Don. Hope you get a response on this.

Are you sure that the clamps for the tailpipes aren't rubbing the body on the inside where they exit the car? I put in a new Corvette Central exhaust a few months ago and that is the only area that gave me a problem. And that is only inches from the rear exhaust hangers. Just a thought.

Thanks. No, I can't see anything rubbing. It appears to be the rubber loop, where it overlaps onto itself. It squeaks as the car vibrates. I'm sure I have some originals lying around, so I may bead blast them and give them a try.

          Donald,

I have exactly the same issue and at first i could not find it, but eventually it was the rubbing William discribes.

To find it lie under the car and move the pipes vertically i.o. horizontally. If you hear the sound it is definately the rubbing.

Problem solved! You guys were correct. It was the exhaust clamp that was rubbing. It appeared to have plenty of clearance, but it was rubbing on the backside. I moved the clamp slightly closer to the muffler, and no more annoying squeak!

            Thanks!
