R12 systems are still serviced by any automotive A/C shop including Goodyear, Firestone. Expect some 'sticker shock' on the price they charge for the refigerant! The last time I checked it was running $60-70/lb and you've got just shy of 4 lbs in the system...
With two R-12 cars ('88 MBZ and '91 MR2) I've been researching this as there are very few shops in SoCal that still have R-12 service equipment. I've received several referals to Lynn's Auto Air, 13255 Woodruff Ave. Downey, CA 90242, (NW corner of Woodruff and Foster), which is a few blocks east of Bellflower Blvd. and a couple of blocks south of the 105, 310-803-5611.
I called them last year and got a quote of $49.50 for a basic A/C service (evacuate, charge, leak test) and $43 a pound for R-12. It's first come, first served, so it's best to get there first thing in the morning.
I was in the area Saturday evening and drove by. Of course, they were closed, but it's a neat and clean looking shop from the outside with three or four service bays and an office/customer waiting room. They only do A/C and cooling system work.
Here's part of a message I received from a buddy:
"... just did a major project on my 67 Firebird. I retrofitted the original A6 compressor 2 piece ceramic shaft seal with a one piece lip seal. I bought the part at Lynn’s in Downey since they appeared to be the only shop in the area that has their ___t together. They sell both parts and do the work. If you do not find a closer place, they should be fine."
Give them a call for an update and let us know what they say.
I thought R12 was still readily available in Mexico, which is near Southern California. Don't know if there's other, over-riding reasons for not travelling to Mexico to have your car serviced.
