Need Help on Windshield Wiper Motor Numbers 1971!!

I have a 1971 (built on Jan 28, 1971) and so far every part has been original and the numbers have matched. The numbers I have on my windshield wiper doesn't match the Corvette 1968-1982 numbers or the numbers in the 1970-1970 judging manual--but other corvette forum members say it is an early 70's number. I am confused.

The numbers of the wiper motor (a 5 port):
    sticker with numbers: 4919437
    245 3 3A OR 245 J 3A OR 245 J JA

    Stamping says Delco Products
    Dayton Ohio
    Made in USA
    4939300

The entire peice is silver color except the cover on the washer pump which is black plastic. 5 port plastic is a yellowed white.

If this is not from a 1971 what year is it from? Would it pass for judging--do they look the same?

    Thanks Paul

Re: Need Help on Windshield Wiper Motor Numbers 1971!!

The numbers quoted in the Judging Guide books are for factory original assy's that were supplied as a total unit from Delco (WSW motor + washer pump). The 5-port washer pump version of the assy was a carry over from 1970 where cars had headlight washers in addition to windshield washers.

The remaining 1970 pumps were used on early '71 cars with two of the four output nipples 'blinded' by joining them with a short piece of rubber tubing. We don't know precisely when the last of the left over 5-port pump assy's were used up, but I'd suggest that's why your wiper motor has a 5-port washer pump on it.

Now, on the label that's on the wiper motor, I suspect you'll find the PN on the sticker (4919437) corresponds to the service PN for a raw wiper motor (without washer pump) and you car had its original wiper motor replaced early in its life.

The date coding line is a form of Julian dating that indicates the wiper motor alone was built the 245th day of 1973....

What you have is a SERVICE replacement motor assembly. It was manufactured on the 245th day of 1973 or 1983 (assuming your first interpretation of the code on the label is what it actually is).

At some point, someone replaced the motor assembly and, likely, transferred the washer pump from the replaced unit. The GM #4919437 motor assembly is applicable to 1969-72 Corvettes.

The configuration of this motor should be externally identical or virtually identical to the original. So, if you were to obtain a reproduction label with the correct part number and appropriate date, you should be "home free".

Thank you for the info. I am going to have the entire unit rebuilt and apply the correct sticker.

          Paul,
Great advice from the other guys--they're right on. You're not home free, however, because all the repro tags I've seen are detectable from the originals and will have a slight deduct at judging. The only way to get around that is to find a correctly date original 71 motor for your car.

I am having the unit restored and will take the slight deduct on judging. Even if you have the original decal it would end up being destroyed when you have the motor restored and replated.

              Hi Mike,
I have the original label from my 71, mid-January build, 5 port pump/motor. BUT, all the printing is gone. The label is smaller, and much shinier (almost chrome) than the reproductions I've seen. Can you tell me what the font for the data looks like on original labels? The label is as shiny as the CU/HP label on the air cleaner lid. Thanks!
              Regards,
              Alan

PS: The size of the repro labels seems more in keeping with the lables I see on slightly newer cars.

The label on mine was shiny--chrome looking and the numbers/letters were block, small, solid black--looked like the ones sold by Paragon. Don't have it now since I sent it in to be refurbished and replated. Sorry.

                  Paul,
Thanks for the info. My label is actually in quite good shape. BUT, there is no trace of the printed information at all. I might try to reprint it.
