'63 hood ornament painting

What is the best method to get the '63 hood ornament painted (with the numerous black rectangles). I was thinking of masking it using (pin striping) tape and paint spraying it black but I thought I better ask around first, there might be a better/easier method I've overlooked...

I've never tried painting the emblems as I bought a stock of NOS ones back in the 70's and won't need to do in my lifetime. However, I did repaint my 63 hood screens by spraying the entire surface, then went back and painstakingly removed all the paint on the high ridges with a rag wrapped in a stick with paint thinner. It took a long time, but they remain perfect to this day. I did them in 1976.

I thought you were referring to the crossed flags. GM used a screen for the hood panels.
