1972 w/ a/c Heater Core Removal and Replacement

Have my 72 passenger side dash apart with dash pad, radio and gauge cluster out. Having trouble removing the duct work but it's somewhat out of the way. Have the 3 bolts out of the heater box. One post said there is a rivet on top of the box that must be drilled to get the box out but seems odd to have to do that. Suggestions? Thanks.

Daniel I have a 70, but it has been a few years since I have replaced my heater core. There is one bolt that does not have a head on it like most bolts, the head is inside the car on the right side of the housing and on the firewall near the fender is a nut of this bolt that has to be removed in order to remove the heater core housing. Take a razor knife and slice your heater core hoses to easily remove the hoses. Looking at the way the heater core tubes come down vertically a person may think he has to do more from the engine bay side. I did not have any rivet to drill out on my 70.

I have found jam nuts on the studs under the sealant and hidden.

Daniel - I had the heater core out of my 72 last year and if I remember correctly there are three screws that screw into the firewall from the heater box side. The part that you see that looks like a rivet is actually the head of a stud attached to the heater box that goes through the firewall. There's a bolt on the engine side. Mine was buried under some of the firewall coating.

          Matthew,

Thanks for the advice. I'll go take a look. I found the 3 screws you mentioned and the head that looks like a rivet. The heater box seems to be held fast right at that point, so that's probably it.

          Best Regards,

Thanks for the advice to all who posted on this question. I also saw an old post reminding one that when you change the heater core to not forget about gaskets. I ordered a new core from Year 1. In the description from Year 1, there was no mention of gaskets. Should I assume that the gaskets come with the heater core or should I look elsewhere for a heater core gasket set. Also, which gaskets am I looking for?

I'm replacing the heater core on my '74 w/ac right now, got the gaskets and seals from doc rebuild. It fit pretty good, the instructions that came with it helped a lot.

I am going to have to do my 74' Conv. with A/C this fall to replace the heater core - it is bypassed right now on the engine.
I have read these threads and have looked at the firewall and I cannot even imagine where this firewall nut would be located. Could someone describe in words exactly where this nut is located on the firewall or post a picture?

Robert I just looked at my 70. The nut on the underhood firewall is located just above the blower motor, just look under the top of the fender. My 70 has a L shaped piece of metal that is riveted to the housing which gives extra support when the nut is tightened so it will not gouge into the housing. Your 74 should be similiar.
I was looking at my old GM parts book illustrations the other day and the illustration indicated this location.
