is it possible to re-vulcanize an original gas pedal?

maybe this is a dumb question, but I'm wondering if its possible, or if there is a vendor who will re-vulcanize the rubber on the back of an original 59 corvette gas pedal? I have the original, but the rubber wore off most of the back due to rust underneath. So I'm wondering, rather than wait forever for an original to come up on eBay or the Driveline, or buying a repop, can this be done? I saw the US made repop and I can tell the difference in the bands on the front of the pedal, so I imagine a judge could too...

    thanks!

    Hi Ian,

Since the pad will not be removed during judging, if you can't find someone to make the repair via vulcanization, I'd try repairing it the way you would a flat on a tire or tire tube. Buy a new or used repro pedal pad for appropriate donor material, slice and/or grind off what you don't need, and create a suitable patch shaped to fill the void in the back of your original. Clean both with lacquer thinner or wax & grease remover, and use the type of rubber cement used in tire/tube repair. You can probably affix the pad to your pedal and somehow apply pressure to the front either with small spring clamps or a firm foam block at the end of something like a short length of 2x4 pressed against the seat to ensure that the correct form is maintained by the pad while the cement is drying.

    Good luck!

    Louis

Yes it is possible. First make a pattern $3000.00. Next find a contact at one of the major tire makers to run your part in the lab. I like the idea of making the repop look closer to original. Little carving and grinding and you might have a better example.
