    66 Exhaust Install Questions

I've succeeded in removing the exhaust system from my 66 SB roadster. I should receive my new welded system from Allen's on Saturday. As I prep to install it I have a few questions.
    • The U-bolts that I removed from the point where the front exhaust pipe assembly mates up with the secondary pipe was hanging from the "clamp" (as it's referred to in the AIM page F200). Is that correct?
    • The speedometer cable appears to be getting cooked by the right side exhaust. The speedo is still working so I don't want to replace it. How should it be installed to avoid the heat of the exhaust pipe?
    • Mine has one cheesy heat shield on the driver side front exhaust pipe assembly. The AIM shows one on each side. Should I plan to buy two and install them?
    Thanks for the input.

Yes, the center clamps loop over the top of the bracket that is bolted to the trans. The speedo cable fits into clips along the side of the tunnel and if properly done, they stay away from the exhaust heat pretty well. Buy new heat shields and install them as you need them both and the tunnel will be cooler with them installed.

      Bill
      Thanks for the reply.

I thought the clamps were supposed to go over the bracket but just wasn't sure. There was a leak at that joint and I thought perhaps the u-bolt was just supposed to go around the pipe and it would tighten better. But as you've described it, the bracket must perform some of the clamping duty. We'll go with that and hopefully the new pipes won't leak at that spot.

I'll have to look closer for where the speedo cable clips are supposed to be and get that set up. If I let it run like it is now, the speedo will stop working soon. What kind of clips were they - plastic or metal? Were they riveted to the fiberglass or attached some other way?

I will add the heat shields to the order.

Thanks for the reply. It really is helpful to an inexperienced person like me.

Metal clips, riveted to the passengers side of the tunnel area. Leftover holes should be obvious even if the rivets are gone...
