Never before published picture of one of the first Fuel Injected 1957 Factory race cars at Nassau, Bahamas December 1956. Two cars were built in early November, shipped to Engineering in Warren, Michigan and fitted with special equipment. Then shipped to Sebring and test driven by Dick Thompson and Paul Goldsmith. Then boated to Nassau.
The car was boated back to Florida after the Governors Trophy Race to run on the beach at Daytona. It was also sent over to nearby Daytona/New Smyrna to race in the 1st NASCAR Sports car race where it took 1st in class. It then went to Sebring and was used as a practice car while two new cars were being prepared.
I now have film footage showing the practice cars on the track at Sebring and also in the hanger with the two new cars and the Bill Mitchell SR2 with no engine.
The car was retired and sold by GM in 1958 and owned by one individual until I bought it in 2004. It still has the unrestored original engineering dyned engine, very early 4360 fuel unit, factory roll bar, RPO 581 suspension, GM part #'d Sun tach, special SR1 shortened steering column etc..
The annual Nassau race was a serious event and a place for great fun as evidenced by two drivers shown playing in the ocean...as a warm up to driving their Ferrari and Porsche 550 Spider.
