New Guy and New Guy C1 Question

Hello everyone! What a great community and organization. My name is Tim Allen and I have been frame on restoring my 1959 for about 2 years (while I drive it) and I have had a great time. I move from area to area and have found it very relaxing and gratifying. Here is my new guy, rookie question:

I just removed my fuel tank in order to replace the fuel filler hose, clamps and just restore the entire area. What I found was no pads for under the tank and six round holes cut out in the bottom of the fiberglass tank cavity. Two on the left, two on the right and two in the center. Are these holes supposed to be covered or plugged up by something? You can see right down to the road. They are in sunken cavities within the body and are too big for regular rubber plugs that are used throughout the car. Was this for ventilation? It seems to me that water and all kinds of stuff would get up in that area. Sorry I am asking a dumb question......

Re: New Guy and New Guy C1 Question

Hello Tim, and welcome to the forum.. Having restored my '59 -frame on-- i can tell you it's alot of fun. but i too drove mine while doing the resto.. 20 yrs later i was at 2nd flight and almost at--top flight --with it when i sold the car. I now have a '58.
To answer you're question, i'm almost certain (99.999%)that those holes are for ventlation. at least i never had any other notion for them. i'm sure others will add to this.. if you have the tank out be sure to check you're sending unit, the rubber vent hose under the tank fill line --a 4" tube for venting to the street, and you may want to replace you're "vent " line from the tank to the gasoline filling area. If you're replacing the fill line be sure to put a sealer around both ends.
    good luck
    john

Thanks for the opinion John! They looked too large to be filled, they look like they are there for a reason.

Marty........I am in the hardwood flooring business and my name really helps to set me apart from my competition. I wish I had a $1.00 for every time I heard the comparison..........by the way, thanks for buying the Binford tools....it keeps the show on the air! Best wishes, Tim Allen
