Would someone please look at the '67 big block hood on e-Bay and give me your opinion on whether it's GM? It's item #230233837487. I spoke with the seller, and it was very confusing; he says the hood came off a '67, but I asked him if it it a GM hood. He never directly answered me but said that it 'was not an aftermarket part'! The auction ends about 2:00 CST Saturday. Thank you.

Re: '67 BB hood on e-Bay
The photos suck.... It could be a true GM hood. Appears to have holes and brace for the chrome scoop insert... can't see holes for "427" script. Possibly an over counter item. The hinge bolt holes look correct....
A photo that really shows the underside detail would be a plus.. especially when the bid is already $1000. Ask for better photos.....- Top

Re: '67 BB hood on e-Bay
Thanks, Stephen. I doubt that I'll be able to get any more photos at this late date and from this seller; he seemed rather 'harried' when I spoke to him. The reason I'm interested is that I think I may have one of those rumored '67's that is a small block but came with a big block hood because of a hood supply problem.
The alleged hood supply problem supposedly occured in late February-early March, and my car was built on 3-8-67. Plus, a previous owner said that he changed out the BB hood because he thought it was incorrect. Any other members who may want to de-bunk this as a 'myth' are certainly encouraged to chime in. I'm fairly new here (one year), so I may be chasing rainbows. Just an honest question from me.- Top

Re: '67 BB hood on e-Bay
As far as BB hoods on a SB... Sorry, gotta go... Bigfoot is knocking on my front door!
Sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously, just leave the SB hood on it. It is HIGHLY unlikely it came with a BB hood, and you are going to get a lot of grief trying to convince folks that it came that way originally. Considering not a single UNDISPUTED example has been brought forth out of allegedly weeks of production, it strains credulity to believe any were actually factory produced.- Top

There are certain subjects that all you have to do is make mention of and it turns into a full blown debate... this happens to be one of them, so you will have to excuse some of the reactions.
Take care,

Re: '67 BB hood on e-Bay
Didn't realize I was opening a touchy subject here! Sorry, but thank you for all the replies--that's one more myth I can check off my list. I've gotta go work on my one-off, one-owner '53 Corvette BB coupe with 6-speed now (serial -1, of course).- Top

Re: '67 BB hood on e-Bay
Larry, I looked at one of those rumered small block cars with a bb hood just last week. The owner said that he is 2nd owner & 1st owner was a friend that bought it right out of the air force acadamy. He owns an engine building shop in San Antonia Tx. & currently has a 350 in it. He says that he has the original 300/327 at home. This is the second year that I have seen this car & talked to him during spring break in Port Aransas Tx. This year I took a better look at the car. It has a 5000 rpm tach and small block radiator with the hood prop on the left side. It is serial # 186xx which should make it a May production car. The car appears to be mostly original other than the 350 & a repaint. I'm new to all this detail on Vettes & far from an expert, but the knowledge that I have gained on this forum & researching my own 67 caused me to take a harder look at his car this year. As far as the hood on ebay I am no help at all as my bb car has a sb hood cobbled on it that has been there since at least 1975.- Top

Re: '67 BB hood on e-Bay
Thanks, Tom; very interesting. I'm new here, too (obviously) but am learning a lot. I've owned Corvettes since 1970 (a '62, a '66, and now a '67) and have done a complete about-face in my philosophy. I used to think that whatever it took to make 'em go faster was desirable; now I appreciate keeping them stock and original.
I also think that any car assembly line wouldn't let a shortage of one part hold up assembly if another part that would work is available. I'm sure Ford wouldn't have shut down its 1956 line if it ran out of red battery caps when yellow ones were available! Right now, I guess I'll go with the consensus that no documented example of a BB hood on a SB car exists. The one you saw, though, seems to be pretty good evidence. Thanks again.- Top

Re: '67 BB hood on e-Bay
I have a friend who is looking for detailed photos etc... on the '67 BB hood. He is a Vette lover, and produces very high end RTM fiberglass body panels for some of the big automotive OEM's. He is considering doing a very high quality '67 BB hood, anyone know where he could find detailed photos etc... to aid his research?
Thanks,
Paul- Top

Re: '67 BB hood on e-Bay
If he pursues this he will certainly pick up an original or two, but for now he is in the preliminary evaluation stages. Any info he can find on identifying an original, underside or detail pics , basically anything he can learn on the BB hood.
Thanks,

There are at least three different companies that are making PM hoods now, plus numerous ones that make them in hand layed. His only chance to break into that market is to make a better product. To do that he has to have everyting correct, color, texture, hardware details, etc. There are several running changes to be considered also. So if he is serious about this, he needs to hire someone who knows, to consult with him, so that can be achieved. Otherwise, we just have another non correct hood on the market.- Top
