    Locked up smog pump 68 327 / 350

Just discovered a long lost smog pump from a 68 I used to have. A quick search here confirmed my memory that it was in fact from a 68.

The problem is, it is locked up. What is the best way to free one up? Is there anything that can be soaked, or is a tear down the only remedy ?? Is this a DIY project, or should I farm it out to a specialist. Thanks.

I did a search and found the pump info, but couldn't find info on a locked up pump.

Having the pump "lock-up" is not too unusual. Sometimes, it happens in service and will cause "quite a commotion". Usually, I think the cause is a failed bearing or disintegrated carbon vanes. Usually, the pumps can be rebuilt. However, I know of no source for rebuild parts and a failed pump might create special rebuild challenges. I'd send it to Bill Hodel for a complete rebuild. It will come back perfect.

      Hi Tom
Unless you intend to keep the smog or put on your car and never took a smog pump apart before.....then don't do it to this one.
What you can do is find another pump dated like a 73 to 75 where it isn't so expensive to replace.
All you do is take the bolts off the back, tap out the back cover but carefully using some square pegs and tap clock wise and you'll see it come apart. If you use a screw driver and start banging on the back you'll leave marks and it looks ugly.
Once the rear cover comes off you can inspect and see why it doesn't turn. Usually corrosion. But you can soak it and lube it and eventually it will turn. I've done quite a few of them and even restored them. I can send you some pictures of before ugly to very nice looking originals. But it takes a little time but once you do one you can do them all. I would not recommend you taking out the drum unless you have a press. That was fun using the press at my work machinist shop. I made a non functional smog pump as the ceramic fins inside were damaged.
So it can be done as I was a first timer too. Maybe this should go in the restorer next time!!!
If you need any help just send me an email. Thanks, Grant

Thanks Grant ! I don't even have the car any more. I think I should leave this job to the pros !!
