    Stereo Install for Mid Year

I'm deep into prepping the 66 for this summer's run on Route 66 with my son. An important (and reversible) modification of the radio is in process. I am installing KHE 300 stereo (complete with IPod connections) that fits without modifying the dash. So far so good.

A few questions for those who might know:
    • The wiring calls for connecting one lead to ignition, one to battery and one to ground. It also suggests to not connect to the original wiring. What can I connect to? I see what look spare spade connectors in the fuse box for power windows and some other accessories. Can I use those for either battery or ignition?
    • What is the best ground to connect to?
    Thanks

The two spare lugs near the bottom are hot all of the time. You could use that one for the memory. I would use the original radio hot and ground for the switchable source.

Wayne - thanks for the reply. Is there a quick way to identify the ground and the hot wire in the plug that fit into the back of the original radio?

      Cheers

The connector for the radio has , yellow, black, and gray. Black is ground, yellow is hot when key is on, gray is the light bulb.

Success!!! I used a female spade connector to plug into the original yellow wire in the original radio connector. There was an easy ground that I used in the main dash frame rail so I used it. And I used the spare plug you mentioned in the fuse box for the unswitched power source for the radio's memory. It all worked well. Just more than a bit of contortionism to work under the dash!

Do you know if there is a switched lead in the fuse box I can use? There is one more unswitched lead I could use but I'm not sure about the rest of the box. I am going to hard wire in an extra cigarette lighter outlet for Ipod and cell phone chargers. My plan is to run the wire into the glove box through the opening for the glove box light. If I've got it figured out right I should have a pretty neat package that doesn't cut any original items and manages the wire mess pretty well.

My son and I are planning a Route 66 run this summer and I want to manage the modern electric clutter by isolating it in the glove box.

Thanks for the help on the radio wiring. It worked perfect.

            Cheers
