1965 350hp coupe crossed flags emblem color of orange paint

    Hello All,
I am trying to repaint the crossed flags emblems on the front and sides of my 65 350 hp coupe. I am having a hard time finding the color for the orange-red paint. I have three emblems 1 side original amd 1 side and 1 frt that were chevrolet replacements. ( They have two year part numbers on them 65 and 66 so I dont think they are original.)
Anyway they have three different shades of orange / red on them. I think I need a color about like a clay pot from what I can tell looking at other cars etc. Does anyone know of either a spray can color or an oem automotive paint code that will match this. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Bill

    Bill,

The red/orange color is unique to the 63-65 emblem, part number 3827158. The color on the emblem released for the 1966 model, part number 3872930, was darker, almost maroon. That emblem became the service replacement for all 63-66 cars some time in the mid/late 60's and both part numbers appear on the back.
The pic below is a correct NOS 3827158. I'd call it a red/orange? The color on the side emblems and the front emblem should match.

Short of experimenting with various mixes of Testor's model paint reds to create the color you want, you'll find an incredible array of reds in the Revlon nail polish display at the drugstore.

        That's a good idea John.

Also, the white wasn't actualy white. It was more of a cream color. The colors were gloss.

By the way John, how is it that you know about fingernail polish anyway? What you doing in the cosmetic section?

Here's another example of what Michael has shown on the side flags, but in this case, with the nose flags. On the left is an early '80s service (or repro ?). On the right is probably the original off a very late '65 that had an "incident" with a school bus in Marshall TX, in late 1968. He gave it to me 22 years later.

Same thing - looking to match red on an original emblem years ago; the local hobby shop went out of business, and my wife suggested the nail polish display - I never knew there were so many reds.

John's nail polish idea probably presents the easiest solution, but for my '66 (I know it's more maroon than yours), a combination of Testor's model paints
#1103 red, #1140 brown and a yellow (for which I don't have a number) allowed me to obtain an exact color match with a friend's NOS emblem. Although I didn't record the proportions, I think I ended up with a mix of about 60% red, 30% brown and around 10% yellow. For the earlier badges, you'll probably need to add a bit more yellow. You'll also have to add a bit of thinner to get it to flow so that you end up with a smooth finish. Good luck!

Michael, Very nice pic of a nice NOS 158 my friend. Oddly enough it looks familiar. Anyhow when my 63FI car was first judged at Marlborough old Bobby Gregory dinged me minus two for SR flags. I had the later GM replacements on the car. Now the car has some really mint 158
orange flags with the ivory or creme colored white. The blue shade is different also I do believe. The 158's just made the side of my car. The original FI emblems are also the orangish red with the creme colored white. No comparison to typical NOS FI emblems or fender emblems.
Most fellows that repaint the flags tend to make the paint too glossy though. Another hard thing is finding the correct speed nuts to hold the flags on. Installing the passenger side with the heater motor in the way is quite difficult. I just printed your pic to compare it. John D.
