Sorry but...68 and 69 coupe door weatherstrips again.

It looks like I ordered the wrong door weatherstrips for my Jan built 69 coupe...it would appear that it ORIGINALY had the 68 style weatherstrip...

Here are two pics of what the car originaly had, and what I ordered. As you can see they are very different!

I bought them from The Last Detail and this was his reply when I question him...."Looking at our '68 weatherstrip, it appears you may have '68 weatherstrip on your car. If you would like to return the weatherstrip you purchased along with the original, we would gladly compare them to our stock and send the ones that match."

I know that the rear vertical door glass weatherstrip changed three times in 69 so I checked the 68-69 TIM&JG but there is no mention of a running change for the door weatherstrip in 69 so I'd like to get some opinions on this. I'm not the original owner but these weatherstrips were old and crusty when I bought the car back in 88 and I just reused them so I'd have to say that I'm 99% certain that they are original even though they would appear to be incorrect for a 69.

Has anyone else come across these "68" door weatherstrips on "early" (Jan-31st, vin 14xxx) 69s?

Since there is no reference to this in the 68-69 TIM&JG I would also assume that there wouldn't be any points taken away either for having the "wrong" weatherstrips?

What would you all do...put the "incorrect" 69 door weatherstrips on my 69 or the correct 68 weatherstrips on my 69?

    Thanks

Greg, I would just use the 68 weather strip, especially if it fits correctly. Though I have not run into this personally, it does not surprise me at all. There were a lot of running changes in 68 that ran into 69. I wouldn't modify your door to fit the 69 weather strip. Also, I have seen door weather strip that was split in half on the bottom side of the door. I think they did this because in some cases the weather strip was a little too short. Just an observation and a solution if you run into that.

      Hi Terry and Greg,
I've been under the impression that the door weather strip was originally 2 pieces (per door) and that the gap varied because of how the strip was installed. The reproduction I see seems to be 1 piece.
      Regards,
      Alan

PS: An 'Interior Person' I judged with felt that if you installed it in 1 piece and then slit it with a blade the ends would be too close together and too well aligned.

Either it was too short and they were afraid of tearing it or it was too long and they couldn't make it fit and cut out a section. Maybe it provided a place for water accumulation to escape?? I don't know, Terry

There were two different design door weatherstrips used for BOTH 1968 and 1969. The second design for 1968 was the first design for 1969. Therefore, there were a total of 3 different door weatherstrips used over the 1968-69 period. I would expect that, based upon build date, your car would have used the first design 1969 weatherstrip (same as second design 1968). However, I expect that the change to second design 1969 would have occurred not too long after your car was built.

The above applies to the on-door weatherstrip as well as the forward pillar post weatherstrip.

Thanks guys. The two piece weatherstrip isn't really what I was wondering about. The impression that I have is that all repop weatherstrip is sold that way and if you want to make it original just cut it in the middle.

What has be wondering is why I have "68 only" door weatherstrip on my 69 or is this common on the early 69s? I just think it's funny that the vendors list 68 by itself and then 69-77 when in my case it would appear to still use 68 door weatherstrip.

            Any thoughts?

I have seen the references to 1968 and 1969-72. All I can say is that they are incorrect. There were THREE different sets of door weatherstrips used as I described above.

Thanks for the info Joe. I'll take that back to the vendor and see what he can come up with. Would you happen to know when the 2nd design 68 door weatherstrip started?

I would say second design 1968 started ABOUT April, 1968 and went through 1969 production until ABOUT February, 1969. However, it's possible that the 1969 use continued well after February, 1969, either intermittently or exclusively.
