    '69 Engine compartment finish

I'm detailing on the engine compartment on a 1969. I did search the NCRS archive threads for the semi-gloss to semi-flat (low-gloss) black rattle can paint for the engine compartment: underside of hood, inner fenders, and firewall.

I did some test areas and thought the Corvette Central PN 103536 Low Gloss Black spray paint and the Dupli-Color Low Gloss Black DE1634 Engine Enamel spray paint matched pretty well with the firewall and inner fender color already on the car. I am leaning toward the Dupli-Color Low Gloss Black because of the enamel and it's also high-temp, spray pattern is a little nicer too.

It's just my lack of knowledge and inexperience but I'm confused by, "the vertical portion of the firewall is painted with blackout, as is the area around the brake cylinder or booster" on page 181 of the 6th edition TIM&JG. Is "blackout" a different paint? Is it textured paint like wheel well coating or something completely different?

Wondering if someone is willing to share with me their knowledge so that I don't paint the engine compartment AND the vertical blackout area of the firewall the wrong color or the wrong finish? Photos attached. I can see what looks like a different finish (I'm assuming blackout) around the area of brake master cylinder. This car does have PS, PB, and AC but no booster. L-46 engine, October 31, 1968 build.

P.s. I have the wrong MC brake cover on the car (J1703). There may be other "not quite right" items in the photos too, it's a work-in-process.

The firewall area around the master cylinder is painted the same as the remainder of the firewall. No "textured" paint was originally used. The wheel well blackout was essentially the same. However, it may appear textured in areas where the "undercoating" was also applied.

As far as I know, the same big paint sprayer did all of the engine compartment at once, usually with little regard for what they did - or did not - hit.

Take a look at my pictures linked below. You can see bare fiberglass, black paint and yellow overspray in unique places.

            Hi Patrick,
I did not see your photos. I'm still getting used to this new software upgrade so maybe I'm not looking in the right place? I did manage to upload multiples of the exact same photo so I'm obviously still learning. Change is my friend?

I can see on my car where the factory blackout paint was applied along the rear inside fenders, underside of the hood, and the engine compartment area just below the hood rain gutters so it will be fairly easy to duplicate the same spray patterns.

Noted: "usually with little regard for what they did - or did not - hit." Thank you, Patrick, for that claification.

                Hello Patrick,

Success! Not sure what happened but I have tons of photos now from your link. THANK YOU so much!!!

Your Bowtie pictures sure make the masking and engine blackout process easy to follow with the yellow - black combo.

While scanning through all the pictures, I've noticed quiet a few things on my '69 that are wrong, missing, or just plain messed-up. Damn, I have a lot of work to do yet. Restoration is a marathon not a sprint. I have to keep reminding myself to take it one day at a time.

Once again, thank you so much for all of your continued help.

                Kevin

                  Kevin,

The original finish was a semi-sheen black. The original part number was, 1050104. This paint is available thru the aftermarket. Although, it is not the same formula, it is as close as you can get.
