    1972 LT-1 Idle Stop Solenoid.

There is a ton of information with some conflicting information. I have what it appears to be a 71-72 solenoid.
It has two tabs and vacuum lines to it. It is not working . I have one tan wire that receives 12V when the ignition is on but the solenoid does not power up as connected. Looking on line shows solenoids for 71-74 with a single lead. Can someone tell me if this is indeed the correct solenoid or do I need to order one with the single tab? What is the deal with the vacuum. Now that I have proper timing, I need to get this working to prevent dieseling.

Bob, I am not sure about your application but that unit is what is on my 71 Combined emission control system. It controlled the vacuum to the advance can on distributor among other things.

Do you have 2 wires or one to the solenoid. My tan wire is connected to the outboard terminal

Yes. 2 wires. Tan outboard and blue inboard.

beginning to wonder if mine is actually for a 71 and not 72!

The solenoid you pictured is a 1971 solenoid----GM #1114444. However, most of the top plastic shield is broken away.

The 1972 LT-1 solenoid was GM #6273914. This solenoid had a single blade electrical connector and no vacuum connections. It was discontinued in September, 1977 and replaced by GM #1997409. The latter was discontinued in July, 1982 and replaced by GM #1997470. That was discontinued in March, 1988 and replaced by GM #17111376 which is now discontinued without supercession. Standard Motor Products solenoid #ES9 is virtually identical to the 17111376 and remains available.

The configuration of the 1997409 was very similar to the original 6273914. The configuration of the 1997470 was significantly different (shorter) than the 6273914. The configuration of the last available solenoid was considerably different than the original but it will function perfectly for the application.

Thanks, Joe for the clarification! I see the ES9 readily available. While searching, I came across a Duralast E403 which appears to be the same as the ES9. I just picked one up and will make the change! Hopefully this eliminates my dieseling. When I bought the car, I could tell the timing was off. I just didn't know how much! 33 degrees at idle. Oh my! At least it didn't run on!
