    C4 Corvette Lumbar System 1984-96

Sport Seats with adjustable lumbar and wing sport was offered starting in 1984. The design of this system changed over the years. I'm here to share my knowledge of these changes as the production years carried on. Starting in '84-'93 Sport Seats operated using the same lumbar system configuration even though the styling of the seats had variations. Each seat had its own lumbar pump that pumped air directly into all three chambers synonymously. These pumps operated with a small spinning piston that shakes a diaphragm to create air pressure. To make adjustments, a button could be pressed, one for each chamber (3), on the right hand side on the bottom seat bolster. Pressing this button would mechanically open up a valve and release air from that chamber. The system was revised and changed in '94 and electronics were added. The outer bolster wing for these years were operated by a cable gear and motor, this bring the side bolster in closer to the occupant, the switch for this operation is located on the bottom left of the seat.
This system was revised and changes were made in '94. The operation of the seat remained the same, it still has wing bolsters on each side that helps hold the occupant in the seat as well as air lumbar support in the middle to provide more comfort. Each seat still has its own lumbar pump and controls. Electronics were added to this system. Air went from the lumbar pump, to a electronic programmer with valves for each chamber them to the lumbar bladder chambers. Instead of all the chambers being connected together, there are 3 separate chambers that are connected to a backing material. This separation of the chambers allowed for more drastic movements within the seat and allowed for more comfort. The bladders were moved from being between the leather and foam, to behind the leather and foam in the very back of the seat. The side bolster wings changed from being cable operated to a air bladder that inflates bringing the side bolster of the seat in closer to the occupant. To operate the seat a electronic button is pressed, this sends signal to the lumbar programmer in the seat, this signal opens a electronic relay valve and releases the air from the selected chamber, 3 lumbar chambers, 2 side bolster chambers that work in unison. I will attach pictures that I have of these systems, parts, etc.
Feel free to add any information that you have to this thread.

You should work this up into an article for Restorer magazine.

It will get wider dissemination as an article as, unfortunately, a lot of members don't utilize their Tech Board.

      Dave,
I plan to work it up as an article eventually would like to get more images of installing the part in a seat so that I can provide a service manual type of instruction for proper installation and repair.
