    1963 Rocker Molding "covering"

I am installing new rocker moldings and was wondering if anyone has any ideas on what protective "covering" i could use so that they don't get scratched? I would remove the covering when the car is being judged, but until then, I'd like to drive that car a bit, but don't want to scratch the moldings.

    Any thoughts?? Then plastic liner????

    Much appreciated

Find a local place that installs paint protection film, and have them covered.

Or, purchase some from Amazon and do it yourself:

Note that Amazon has several different brands/shapes/widths/lengths.

And, the professionals charge more for a reason. However, I would not pay their fee until I was sure I wasn't going to remove it.

It appears that the product you mentioned on Amazon, cannot be removed??

Sure it can. Hair drier or if needed a heat gun, but in reality you can often pull it off.

Can't remember where I got it (20 years ago), but I have used clear removable glass protective tape...no residue last time I used it.
          thx,

            I guts a idea....

How about go to hw store and get some thin clear plexiglass. Cut it so it fits over the sill plates to just inner and outer edges.

Drill 3 holes in plexiglass, matching 3 screw holes in the new sill plate. Counter sink to accept beveled screws. One in center and each end. Remove those 3 screws each side and store in ashtray.

Get longer screws and attach plexiglass covers over sill plates.

Just be sure they don't hit bottom of door and scratch paint.

Edit: this is where my idea came from. I got these from a guy at a car show about 15 years ago.
BTW, when I got this car judged I got no deducts for my sills. Judges wondered why they were so nice.

I think that tape Mark and Patrick mentioned may be easier. The description(if you can read Asian lingo) says it's easily removed. Careful about those painted sill grooves though.

Gave this a shot and ordered a roll. I'll keep everyone posted as to how they come out.

                Thanks!

Know you are interested in the Rocker Molding however for my sills I used some "clear transparent" from

peels right off and no residue. May not be tough enough for rocker.

I will defer to the experts for a correction; however, my buffer guy said that both my original rocker moldings and sill plates were anodized. Not sure what the after-market guys are putting out. I took my parts to a local company which de-anodized them - then took to the buffer to polish - then took them back to the anodizer to anodize. They turned out pretty nice. Anodizing finish is a bit different looking than polished stainless, but necessary to guard against road grime and shoe scuffs.
