Big block shot peened half shafts

I was looking at a set of half shafts this weekend that were for sale. Supposedly they were off a L89 car.
The surface appeared to be textured, which I thought could be from a result of the shot peening.
My buddy said it was rust pitting. The entire shafts had this consistent texture.

    Is the peening noticeable?
Are there a difference in the flanges ( part that attaches to the half shaft) between a small block and BB?

Yes - a peened surface should be uniform and "dimpled".
Whether you have shot peen dimples compounded with rust pitting is another story...
    any pix available ?

And here's probably more than you want to know about shot peening...

      Joseph----

No difference between small block and big block half shaft flanges.

Heree's a picture of a 72 LT1 half shaft. the LT1 shafts were also shot peened according to the judging guide. If you enlarge the picture you can see the texture which I believe was created by the shot peening.

At what point do they become unusable?
Thank you Don for the picture.
I can see the big difference between mine and Don's in terms of condition.

I think the ones you picture are probably still usable. If you can find some place to get them re-shotpeened that will remove the rust and give them a good surface, albeit slightly pitted from the rust. Otherwise, just have them bead or sand blasted.

                    Joseph,

I have participated in many threads regarding this subject. Including the size of the shot peen, a good vendor on East Coast, and exactly what portion of the half shafts get shot peened.
