1976 Drivers Side Spark Plug Ignition Shield

The JG states there are two spark plug ignition shields which only cover the rear drivers and passenger side spark plugs.

There are two bracket attachments that get fastened to the exhaust manifold bolts for each shield on each side.

However on the Drivers side there is an exhaust manifold Plenum atop the manifold ,which covers the exhaust manifold bolt needed to attach the shield bracket.

I do not see how both the Plenum cover and spark plug shielding on the drivers side can both be installed.

    What am I missing?

The threaded stud that holds the exhaust manifold on goes thru the shield over the exhaust manifold and bracket that holds the spark shield. This is on the drivers side of my 1977. A hex nut on the exhaust manifold stud holds both the manifold and spark plug shield in place. I will try to take a photo, but it is very space limited.

Gregory, here’s a shot of the left rear ignition shield brackets on my ‘73 L82, I believe your ‘76 should be similar. Aside from the manifold bolt French lock all of the brackets are original to my car. Also note that my dipstick tube is yet to be installed in the photo. Hope this is what your looking for.

        John,

Do you have a pic of the entire assembled exhaust manifold's heat Plenum cover onto the exhaust manifold and the chrome spark plug shield all in installed?

Gregory, unfortunately I do not. The exhaust manifold plenum was not used in ‘73, I honestly thought they started in ‘78 or ‘79 but now I know they started in ‘76.

I did find this image on the web on what I believe is a ‘76 plenum. From the witness mark noted by the arrow, I would say that the LH ignition shield bracket shown in my original photo is installed in the same location with the plenum already installed on the manifold. From there I would say the chrome ignition shield installs in the same manor as my ‘73. Hope this helps you out.

            John,

Today was my day off and as per your info I was able to successfully install the spark plug shield cover.
I was thinking of how I used to install them on my 70,71 and 73 by using the middle or inboard rear manifold bolt as depicted in your 73 engine photo.
The Plenum hole has a threaded stud that projects through that hole beyond the plenum cover that attaches to the shielding's cover bracket fastened by a washer and nut.
A little PITA as they usually tend to be, but worked out fine.
            Thank you
