    Identify overspray

Hi all ,not really a paint guy .. can anyone tell me if GM painted the hood separately from the factory on my 75 or was it painted after it was installed. I found some overspray on the hood hinges and the original owner said it was never painted.. also having trouble posting pics . Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Re: Identify overspray

I think the hood was in place, so hinges would probably have both color and black out present. Latches should not have color, but I am not sure about black out. I think they were installed after black out during that time period. That all said, mid to late 70s were tough years for quality control at GM and paint repairs at the end of the assembly line was not uncommon. I can't remember a single Corvette delivered to the dealer I worked at in the late 70s to early 80s that didn't require some touch up. After the move to Bowling Green, paint quality improved noticeably. Original owner would not be made aware of repairs made before taking delivery. Also, not sure when it was stopped, bot transport companies at one time would have damage repaired during transit to avoid problems at delivery. Chip.

Can't say for sure on a '75, but they were installed on C2s when painted (see below) I found some overspray on the hood hinges and the original owner said it was never painted.. also having trouble posting pics . I know yours is a 1975, but Per John Hinckley's C2 Assembly Process Presentation (available in the Database of Restoration Documents [DoRD] Sticky Post), here's the order he indicates for the items you are questioning:

Roughly 12 steps into the Body Shop (which precedes the Paint Shop), the Cowl & Dash subassembly (including the female hood latches and cross-cable), which was built up downstairs, was loaded and fixture-located to the underbody and build truck and bonded in place.

The Hood was installed and fitted (still in the Body Shop) about 6 steps before entering the Paint Shop. "Fitted" to me means the hinges were there and the line workers aligned the hood to specs...

After final bake in the Paint Shop (all color applied at this point), the body was moved through a transfer area to the Black-Out Spray Booth, where the ; a large cardboard spray mask was used for the hood underside application, but no masking was used along the front edge of the hood inner panel.

The Hood Support was installed at the 2nd
        thx,

That looks exactly right. Could you post some pictures of latches and cable attached to hood? Thanks for sharing. Chip.
