Ignition coil paint, gloss or semi-gloss?

I'm cleaning up and painting a 207 coil and want to paint it correctly. The judging guide says semi-gloss black, but I have some non- restored original Delco coils that sure look gloss black. Looking thru the forums for an answer, I see many original production coils look gloss and the service replacements seem to be semi-gloss to almost flat black. Thoughts? Thanks, Kurt

The judging guides were written to have the most accurate information regarding originality. You said you have some original coils. Buy a spray can of gloss black and semi gloss, spray a test from each and you'll see that the semi should match the originals and is correct.

Sometimes the Judging Manual is wrong. All original coils were originally gloss black. BUT if you want to pass judging just paint it Semi-Black and after judging paint it correctly in Gloss Black!

Thanks for the feedback. I'll likely paint it gloss and show the judge an original if its an issue.

When writing judging manuals it can be very difficult to describe a sheen of paint. One person's gloss is another's semigloss. Even worse is trying to describe satin, eggshell or flat for some objects.

Go with the gloss level that you find matches your original parts. No one is going to deduct for that, no matter the description.

I just bought an NOS Delco 202 coil still in the unopened box. Upon opening the box, the coil definitely looks to be gloss black as stated above.

NCRS may be changing the 67 guide to call the coil gloss black next printing. I'm not sure about other years. I painted mine gloss black like the original coil was. Thanks
