1994 battery 525 JG vs 655 build sheet

OK, battery pros how about some help here, the #1 judging guide for 1994 LT-1 calls for a AC-Delco battery 693

but spec #47 BATTERY on build sheet calls out a 655. My car is a loaded Aug 93 build '94 convertible # 101906 vin.

Which battery is proper for my car for flight judging ? I ran in to the same thing on my '95 ZR-1 Vin 0003

At Palm Springs National the judges accepted what was on the build sheet as proper, zero deduct
    Thanks, Bob

Bob, I have some information for you. I have in my stuff 1994 VIN 11135 and it has a 655 Battery. The 665 Battery continued in the LT1 until the 1995 model year, stopping in December 1994 at VIN 10682.Starting with VIN 10683 the 671 Battery was installed.
I have documentation on the stopping of 665 and the starting of 671. This is good information if you have an original battery and not a service replacement that most folks present for judging.
I always did like the Build Sheet.

Pat- I would sure appreciate some documentation on that 655 battery- I don't want to go to get flight judging and lose the battery points due to a JG error. Is the JG rewrite team aware of the correct battery now when they rewrite ?
      Thanks

Go with what the build sheet says and take it with you.

That is exactly how I'd judge the battery...based on the build sheet. Remember it's how the car came from GM with only normal dealer prep.

Guys, I prepared a lengthy response and a photo information update yesterday only to lose it to the problem with being notified that I was blacklisted. I sent out the message and then I was knocked out of NCRS. This was not relegated to me only and it has now been corrected by our outstanding tech support staff.
            I will try again tomorrow.

(In another thread he says "I bought a recreated decal on ebay and placed it on a current Delco battery".)

Joe Lucia has brought up a detail about the production line C4 batteries numerous times. And this detail shows in the pictures in the JRM and above. The "Delco Eye" on a C4 battery is on the Negative post end of the top of the case. The way I understand it (from Joe) is that other Delco batteries and all replacement batteries even over the counter from a dealer had the Delco Eye on the Positive end. The position on the Negative end was unique to the installation in C4, because of the viewing angle, and only assembly line C4 batteries had this location for the Eye.

As judges we're coached to consider "configuration" first and foremost. To me, this includes the presence of, and the location of the Delco Eye. Then the Cat number. And details of the decal compared to examples in the JRM. If there isn't a Delco Eye, it's a Service Replacement.

If there is a Delco Eye, then closer scrutiny is required. 17 years, and a few hundred C4 judged, I've only encountered 3 presentations where the installed battery appeared to be the born-with battery. Because it was. It was the same car, 3 different events. "Correct" Delco Eyes are very far and few between.

Begin with the presence of, and location of, the Delco Eye. The OP's build sheet won't be required if his battery doesn't have a Delco Eye. He admits he has a current replacement battery. It most likely does not have an Eye. Service Replacement. 5 points. End.
Here is a Delco with the eye on the positive side.

Re: 1994 battery 525 JG vs 655 build sheet

This is my second posting on this matter as the first one is in never, never land because of the small interruption the other day.
The first photo is of four 1995 ZR1 batteries that were taken out of the original ZR1. They all had less than 1000 miles on the clock. You will notice that there are two colors. During the 1995 run the cat numbers were changed by Chevrolet. Pertaining to the LT1, as far as I have direct knowledge the initial battery for the 1995 was cat 655. At VIN number 10683 it was changed to cat 671. For the ZR1, 1995 started out with cat 484, white housing. At VIN number 800294 i was changed to 674, black housing. I have attempted to purchase one of these ZR1 batteries from a good friend for many years, still waiting for the call. He was very kind enough to let me photograph these batteries along with the ZR1's they came out of. As Dave mentioned the build sheet contains the correct information as to the identity of the battery. I have proposed to the National Judging Team Leader that the build sheet be a required document of the judging process of the C4. They are readily available from the National Corvette Museum. This document contains a wealth of information as to the correct components and would resolve some discussions on the correct part. It is being considered as the 1994-96 Judging Manual is currently going under review for the next version and the build sheet proposal has been submitted to be in the new version. The correct cat number comes into play if you have a battery that the owner contends is an original and wants to obtain full points for originality. Almost all of the C4 batteries I have seen are service replacements. The standard deduction has just been greatly reduced so that the service replacements do not cause a large point deduction for originality.

Attached is a 655 battery, out of a 1994 with optional engine.
