    65 "Tanker" on bat auctions

Hi- "unrestored" 65 L79 N03 was no sale today (bid to $129,444)
    Too much?
    Not enough?
    About right?
Owner states he is going to have the car painted, then relist it.

Interesting auction. IMO, he should have taken the high bid.

That seller did his best to try to make an undocumented car into a real car. The value of any rare car is in the ability to prove what it is And without factory or dealer paperwork he will never be able to do that. The seller was a dealer with short term ownership and could only restate what the previous owner told him. That does not hold water in the long term. As Michael said he should have taken the high bid.

Seller entered this on BAT after 5:00 PM today"

it will be getting a fresh paint job in its original color, and at that point I’ll prolly finish the underside with a little more detail and go for Ncrs judging this summer. And then try to resell in fall with all the work completed

I agree about the importance of factory documentation- However, if this car gets a top quality restoration and wins all the national awards, does it not then become "real" to most people?

I'm certainly not a tanker expert, but I'm sure the experts could look at this car and determine if it really is what he claims it is.

I was bidding o the car the pictures looked pretty good to me. The fuel line the rivets for the jack storage. The lack of the rivet holes i the rear bulk head all looked good. The chassis looked like it was painted with rust arrestor I would have liked to see that in person. How many really documented are are out there?

To be acceptable to me, this car would need a full body off frame restoration done, it really needs it. The problem is if you pay very much for the car and add that cost, you will be underwater very quickly.

Michael Hanson always said it is impossible to fake a tank car if it has never been off the frame. I think that is still true.

Faking a tanker to any acceptable degree of accuracy takes a lot of work and money, no matter when it is done.
