Want to get pulley off to treat rust/corrosion. Looks like a simple nut but question is any tips for holding the pulley in place whilst torquing the nut??

I assume you are inquiring about a 1963-74 power steering pump and pulley. This application uses a tapered shaft and pulley with a special lock nut for pulley retention. If you need to remove the pulley you will need a special puller since, although the shaft and pulley are not a true interference fit, the pulley will usually not separate from the shaft without a puller. If you have an application with a stamped steel pulley, the puller required acts on the groove on the pulley snout and the end of the shaft. For an application with a cast iron pulley, a different type puller which acts on the perimeter of the pulley and the shaft end is needed.
No special tool is needed to install these pulleys. The pulley can be prevented from rotation during the installation process of the nut simply by using a wrench on the flats of the pulley snout for stamped steel pulley applications. That's what they're there for. For cast iron pulley applications you can use a strap wrench applied to the pulley perimeter to retain it while torquing the nut.Last edited by Joe L.; October 29, 2022, 12:36 PM.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: tips for removal of power steering pump pulley
Success. I needed a jaw puller which I loaned from O'Reilly's. Hit the retaining nut with PB....then used my impact wrench with strap wrench...easy peasy. Barely even needed to put a wrench on the jaws. Strap wrench is AWESOME. My favorite projects are those that end up with a new tool!!! Thank you!!!***************
