    Chassis VIN Stamp

Hello All, Is there a full or partial vin stamped into the chassis on a c2? Is it accessible or readable and where is it located? Regards.

      A quote from John Hinckley....

On the 66-67, the 2nd stamp can be seen in this area.

        Paul,

As Harry shows, mine was just forward of the left (driver's) side rear kickup.

I was able to read mine ('67 no side-pipes with the body on) using a dental mirror and a flashlight. Not easy, but it's doable.
Also remember if you do it that way, you're reading the numbers in reverse.
        thx,
        Mark

Here are pictures I took of my frame VIN stamp on my late production '65 coupe. It is located in the area of Rich's picture in his response. I was able to get pictures of it with the body on the frame using an inspection mirror and my cell phone camera. Notice the mistake made by GM when they did not change the last number from a 4 to a 5 and stamped over it. The VIN matches the VIN tag under the dash, on the engine stamp pad and on the transmission case 22095.

You will most likely have to do some cleaning and sanding to see the numbers. I used 320 grit sandpaper to carefully sand in the area until i started to see the numbers using the inspection mirror and a good magnetic flashlight. It helps to have someone help you by either holding the mirror while you take the pictures or vise versa. My car was bought new in Dallas Texas and spent the majority of its time in the southwest until coming to Iowa in 1974 and then never seeing winter weather so the frame didn't need much sanding. There is a function on your cell phone to mirror image the pictures you take because they will be backwards when you take the picures of the numbers in the inspection mirror.

63 and 64 frames had both the VIN stamps. What did start for 65 - 67 was the addition of a year stamp 5,6, or 7 as a prefix for the VIN where as the 63 and 64 frames began with the S character and had no year designation prefix.

Great info and links! I thought the vin was located by the body mount. I was not aware there was another located forward for my 66. Try to tackle this weekend. Probably easier to remove tires and do the search. Hopefully I can report back with some findings. My car does have side exhaust so it will probably be that more difficult.

On my 63 I was able to read the stamp at the kick up with the body off the frame but I could not read it with the body on just too much dirt and surface rust. I could not locate the stamp at the drivers door opening even with the frame off just too much rust there.
