    1962 Replacement Fuel Pump

I need some advise on a replacement fuel pump for a 1962. I am helping a friend get his all-original 1962 327-250 HP Corvette back on the road after a 30+ year sleep. I took all the proper precautions preping (pre-oiling and servicing ignition) the engine before firing. Poured a small amount of gas in the rebuilt carb (Carter WCFB) and the engine fired up but stalled. This was repeated several times with the engine stalling after the fuel ran out.

The suction side of the fuel pump was connected to an external fuel can (by-passing the tank). The fuel line was then disconnected at the carb and it appears the fuel pump is defective since no fuel is getting to the carb.

So the search has begun for a correct replacement fuel pump. The existing fuel pump is the original AC pump and I understand it can be rebuilt. In the interem we were hoping to purchase a replacement to move the project forward. It seems that most, if not all of the Corvette suppliers are out of stock on this pump with no lead time. I just contacted Airtex (whick makes a replacement) but have not heard back. I believe the AC Part # is 4657. Yes, I can go to any auto parts store or even the local Chevy dealer and get a pump but my concern is the position of the inlet and outlet ports. I want to retain the original pump-to-carb hard line. And the extising flex suction line is threaded on both ends. I'm sure I can "jury-rig" a suction line with some brass fittings and hose clamps but prefer not to.

I have also searched the past posts on the replacement 1962 Suction Fuel Line and found out there is a quality issue with the fitting not tapped deep enough causing a fuel leak. I am not sure if that has been corrected. I don't want to order a new fuel line just to find out it's a defective one.

    So here's my questions

    1. Where can I get a correct fuel pump? It does not need to be the correct AC unit to pass judging. Just something to get the car running.
    2. Have the Corvette vendors corrected defective fuel line issue and now supplying a safe fuel line?

I thank you in advance for your recommendations and comments.

Rocco, As mike said these pumps are easy to rebuild, make sure the kit is ethanol resistant. As for the hose Richard Mozzetta posted some time ago that Shafer's Classic Reproductions in Fla. made a correct part. #glh901 there phone number is 1-800-466-1955.

Rocco, I recently went through a fuel pump issue and I called Airtex. The gentleman told me ( true or not) they no longer make fuel pumps, they sold out to Carter. Rockauto currently shows a picture of the pump you need for your car. Maybe this can help you out.

Thanks to all for your prompt replies. Will try the Rockauto pump for the short term and rebuild the original at a later date. Funny the Rockauto pmp is a Carter brand.

You should have left the line to the tank connected. If fuel pump is weak it will not suck up the gas. If you put your finger over inlet it should suck as you turn over engine and just the opposite if you put your finger over outlet. Are you sure you are getting gas to the pump? Sitting for 30 years could be several things wrong with fuel system. Just some food for thought!

                      Re: 1962 Replacement Fuel Pump

Got some good news yesterday that I wanted to share.
We went to NAPA and bought a fuel pump for our 61 Impala 283. The pump should be the same for C1 and C2 small blocks too.
The pump has an adjustable/removable brass block on the bottom that contains the female thread outlet for the metal line to the carb. It can be clocked in whatever position required to allow you to use the stock fuel line with no bending or alterations.
We too want to rebuild the original pump when time allows, but for now we are back on the road in less than half an hour.
The NAPA part number is B0147P. It works great!
