What's the value of this 1984 Corvette?

Will be looking at a 1984 Corvette tonight. It's One owner with 24,000 miles. Owned by a GM retired person. I've never met him or even talked to him. A friend of mine saw the car in his garage and asked if he'd ever sell it and he said he was ready. I will be the first one to look at it. I know 84 wasn't a good year except if it's really nice and has a pedigree like this one. Any idea if it's this good, what's it worth. He probably thinks it's worth $15 to $20,000 but I'm thinking $12,000 at the most.

You didn't mention color combo, or which transmission.
Knowing other options would also be helpful, if you have that info.
Well preserved 1984s are probably somewhat scarce, actually.
I believe an NCRS-quality car that's ready for judging should be $15k-$20k, depending on those other criteria.

I moved your thread from the Help, Support Forum (to be used for questions about website functionality) over here to the Tech Discussion Board. I also put a post in the thread explaining that. Then after half a day and people were answering your question, I deleted my post. I thought you had seen my post by then..

Hi Rex- You will know what it is worth to you when you see it. I have owned an 84 and it was my entry point to the C4. Mine had the Z-51 suspension and the 4+3 transmission. If you live in the Rust Belt, the Z-51 can be a tad on the rough side. A lot of folks opted for the Z-51 when new and lived to regret it. It might be hard to find one without Z-51. As you well-know, prices are highly inflated at this time, but it does seem as if they are cooling off a bit. In my opinion. $10,000 would be a good price for a well-maintained 1984. $12,000 would be my limit. Good luck and I hope it goes your way.

Ok, seen the car! It has 29,889 miles, one -owner. Interior is fair with driver's seat a little worn but no open rips. Rear carpet faded. All dash works. Starts right up, but engine sluggest and has exhaust leaks (original exhaust). Engine never has had any cleanup. Radio works but power antennae won't go down. Has the original wheels and tires. Letters on tires are upside down, never seen that before. Tires look pretty good at least for judging. The biggest issue, he had it re-painted. Original color is a raspberry red and appears like factory color. Matches door jams perfectly. I'm not buying it! Paint job was actually pretty good but has too many issues. He wants $10,000 so might come down a little. He's in his mid 80's and was a Superintendent of some department at GM plant in Marion.

Good call. A perfect, low mileage 1984 would be interesting because of historic significance and you never see them. But due to its harsh ride, low HP, creaky body and finicky Cross-Fire, any other C4 year is a much better driver.

Re: What's the value of this 1984 Corvette?

This thread is interesting to me as I'm original owner of a red/saddle '84 Z51 automatic with 27,000 miles. Mine is all original paint with no worn areas in the interior, all items function, and I have a second set of the one year only recessed letter Goodyears. What did you mean that the tire lettering is upside down? If you mean recessed and not raised that is actually correct for the year.
Mine is an early build '84 (April '83) and was shipped with the window sticker separately and not applied so I have an original multi-part sticker that is still intact.
I would hope mine would be worth in the $15,000-$18,000 range. Like others have said, there aren't many pristine '84's but there's not a demand for them either...

                    Walter,
I believe you'll find that the tire's lettering characters have their tops toward the wheel, instead of toward the tread.
                    That's the "upside down" reference.

OK, got it. Maybe that is another unique characteristic of the '84 tires. Never noticed that before. I wonder why they made them in that configuration. Are the '85 and newer Goodyear Gatorbacks the same?

Perry, I have the same documentation for mine as well. Probably not too many left with all the paperwork and dealer books. I wouldn't let yours go for anything less than $20,000 either. These cars were popular when new and it's hard to believe the bad rap they've received. The cross fire system is probably the deal breaker for most buyers. The '85's are going for some additional $ but not by 50%. The public was so eager for a new Corvette they were scooped up and driven hard. I was in CA for vacation in Dec. '83 and several dealers had '84's on the lots with dealer markups.

The C4's are among the most undervalued-underappreciated cars for enthusiasts to look at today. Many were "scooped up and driven hard", which makes finding a really good one a bit more of a challenge each year, and when you do, you will see the market values trending upward. The NCRS has a great Judging Team for C4 cars, and as Michael mentions in Post #13 above, I hope these original owners and more C4's continue to show up at the meets for Judging and display. A great way to increase membership and keep the NCRS alive and growing...!
