I’m putting all the exterior trim together on my 69’ BB and one of the things that I’m struggling with is the hood eye brow inserts. They should be flush with the hood.
I have the originals (poor condition) and another original set (super clean)that I received from the previous owner.
Neither of these fit worth a darn. I did a search on this forum and apparently this is a re-occurring problem.
I thought I would share how I was able to get a decent fit of these inserts.
Obviously, if the PO would have dry fit and adjusted items prior to painting the car that may have made things easier. Unfortunately for me that didn’t happen so I’m stuck trying to get creative.
First thing I did was carefully clean out paint in the hole in the hood with a needle file.
I then used dental articulating paper (basically carbon paper) and placed the paper between the hood and the eye brow insert. This made a mark on the insert where it was binding.
I then proceeded to grind those spots away with my angle grinder and a worn out zirconia flap wheel.
I was able to get the insert to fit close but the end was still a bit proud.
Being a dentist, I have several types of articulating paper. I used a very thin type and wrapped the post that goes thru the hood hole and carefully pushed the proud end of the insert and could feel it binding in the hole. Removed everything and looked for the mark on the post and then used the needle file to sand the hole in that spot.
Worked really good.
