Survey Results: 1967 Corvette Tank Sticker and Body Shop Job Numbers

Thanks to all the members who responded to our survey. With your assistance, we've now assembled information for 71Broadcast Sheet Sequence Number, and somewhat related to the VIN...and our overall survey results seem to agree. Except for rare circumstances of chance, the Body Shop Job Number (sequential 1-500 at both Dow-Smith [formerly A.O. Smith] and St Louis) was NOT the hand written number on the Tank Sticker. The Job Number was primarily intended for the construction of the raw body shell (coupe or convertible, small block or big block, etc.). The 'missing' Broadcast Sheet Sequence Number (also a sequential 1-500, but only at St Louis), is best associated with the final assembly and options...and this had a close relationship with the VIN (on occasion, they could have been identical).

As John once stated, 'Corvette Build Orders 1965-1966 Part I' and '1965-1967 Part 2' in the Summer and Fall 2001 issues of the NCRS RestorerHERE

Of the 71 cars; 12 of them have all of the data elements needed as shown in the Table below.
    - 1 - 12 cars Table.jpg
    * If last 3 of VIN > 500; 500 is subtracted to adjust Job/Sequence Number difference

The Chart below shows that the average Body Shop Job number difference from the VIN is ~28 times larger than the average Tank Sticker/VIN number difference.

The next Chart below shows the average monthly differences (and full year average) thru the '67 model build year for the VINs minus the handwritten tank sticker numbers. Note the clear trend from positive to negative differences as the build year proceeded.

The next Chart below shows the average monthly differences (and full year average) thru the '67 model build year for the VINs minus the handwritten Body Shop Job Numbers. Note no real trend is evident as the build year proceeded.
    - 4 VIN minus Body Job No. 006.jpg

The Table below shows all of the raw data and associated calculations performed. Note work stoppages occurred in the October 1966 to January 1967 timeframe, which had more of an effect on AOS body production quantities.

I'm a little late to the party, but here's another piece of data from my '67 Convertible:
Vin-05642, 139 is on Tank Sticker, St Louis Body, Early Dec '66. I've not encountered any body panel numbers...yet.

        Mark and Jack,
Thanks for all the time you have put into this "archeology". Over time, I'm sure this list will grow and grow. Part of the fun of this organization. If as a member, we come across further '67 VIN and tank stickers...would you like us to submit the info?

          Hi Leif,

Thank you for your kind words!

Yes, more data would be great!
I will keep track of anything submitted as it is submitted; here on TDB; Private email; regular email - wherever.

What is needed more than anything to substantiate the point we were trying to flesh out with real data will be the full, 3-paired set of numbers on a given car...the VIN; the handwritten Tank Sticker No.; and the Body Shop Job No.

That being said, if only the VIN/Tank Sticker# combination is available; OR if only VIN/Body Shop Job# combination is available - send them thru...we know we have holes, but partial data sets are welcomed as well!

Thanks for your interest and hopefully, we'll get more input!
          thx,
          Mark

              Mark:

My 1967 car VIN 194677S114845 is shown in your listing as a St Louis Body. It is an AOS body car with Trim Tag Body Number A-2201 and Body build date of H16.......or March 16, 1967. It probably has the AOS Body Shop Job Number around somewhere, and I will report if if/when located. The handwritten number on the tank sheet is #343.......which is shown correctly in your study tables.

In the earlier thread on this subject, I stated that the handwritten number on the fiberglass during body assembly did not have any relationship to the final VIN, but that there was a second number that was handwritten on the tank sheet that did correlate with the VIN. And also that this tank sheet handwritten number varied during the year from a small positive to a negative number during the changing months. This was not accepted by many. However, I think your survey has proven this correct.

Thank you for a thorough and detailed study/evaluation.

              Larry

                Hi Larry,

                My apologies.
I have corrected this in my spreadsheet for your car (see screenshot below).
Not sure how that happened......will also re-check what I have.

I recall you saying that and data doesn't lie...

Thank you for your kind words...and good luck finding your Body Shop Job No. !

                      Mark,
In my case #15770 the body panel number is related to the tank sticker "Ident #" listed in the upper left corner of the sticker.
If you analyze the total sequence of the numbering system I believe you will discover the following:

The car was ordered by a dealer on a prenumbered multi-page form purchase order; in my case 24698
That form was submitted to GM to order a car. The "purchase order number" was entered into the GM system as well as the details of the order, engine color etc. That "purchase order" number appears on the tank sticker in the upper center right corner. This purchase order number ties a particular car to the dealer order.
The "Ident. #" is sequentially assigned as cars were ordered, not necessarily assembled. Parts were ordered against the "Ident #" When all parts were scheduled to be available then the car was released for assembly. The various body parts were identified by the chalk numbers on the panels to be tracked to the "Ident #". The system used a maximum of 500 numbers and then started over. In my case my "Ident # is 816913. Subtract 500 from 816913 and you have 413, my body panel chalk number.

If you notice both those numbers also appear on the vehicle window sticker.

                      Steve
