Re: 72 LT1 6239 carburetor question
I see your carburetor is dated 261.
I have looked at several "known Original" 70, 71 Holley carburetors that have the clutch head screws and I'll call it a solid housing. I have looked at 2 known original 6239's dated 261 and have had email with another person with a carb dated 261, all three of those use clutch head screws.
I have emailed and got pictures from another late 72, with the cover like your car has, using cross-recess pan head screws.
Tally so far... 7- clutch heads... 2- cross-recess, both on 72's.
I'll keep looking at cars, but my feeling right now.... "Judging Manual" is not WRONG.
As with most Holley carburetors, I would find it utterly amazing, shocking, breath-taking to find a Holley carburetor that has not been taken apart, leaks fixed, rebuilt, parts replaced over 50-years. All of these die cast parts warp with age and heat cycles. Small flat parts like these just beg to be replaced over time. But a sheet of glass, 360-grit sandpaper, can make them almost like new again. But some people just replace the parts?
I'll keep looking at carburetors. But I am pretty sure the 70-72 TIM&JG is RIGHT.
