    63 body fiberglass color

    Hey guys,

I have a friend with a vin # in the 16,000 range and he is trying to verify what color the fiberglass should be for his body. The manual states there was off white until approximately vin 11,000 then a transition to gray. Does anyone know what vin range these cars would have been only gray?

On my April 20th 63 (1335X) convertible the only glass that was white was the deck. All gray for a 16000 car is probably a good bet.

Todd, I remember someone here on the TDB saying the had a 65 with a white panel or two, there is likely no reason to explain why this can happen. If you know the bonding process of bonding panels, it should be a easy tell-tell.

I have stripped a bunch of 63-67 cars to bare glass over the years. I'm sure there are some members here who have stripped more than me though.

The earliest change from BONE/BEIGE to LIGHT GRAY glass was the upper surround in 63. About 8800 to 9000. Then additional panels began to appear. I have seen some 63 Coupes with Lt Gray lower door skins and Bone upper skins. Also the opposite.

The latest I've seen a BONE/BEIGE fiberglass panel is the convertible deck panel on a very late production 65 car. 24,000 range. I've seen a few 64 & 65 Cars with BONE/BEIGE panels. all in odd areas. 1 parking light panel. Deck lid only. 1 door. Tail panel.

All these were factory applied, no crash damaged repairs.

                        Interesting string here...

As far as I know, Molded Fiber Glass Co (MFG) of Ashtabula, Ohio was the only supplier of body panels for Corvettes in this timeframe, right?

So it must be they may have had multiple suppliers of the resin/hardener systems that caused the different colors?

Robert Morrison, founder of MFG, convinced General Motors in 1954 to make the Chevrolet Corvette the first production automobile with a fiberglass body.
                        thx,
                        Mark
