'67 Spare tire tub and lid, painted or not?

Looking at the 6th Edition JG, under Spare Tire and Bolts page 90 it says, "the spare tire carrier is also constructed of unpainted natural dark gray fiberglass with visible strands in the finish and has a raised logo near the rear of the V brace with "MFG".... Next sentence says, "The carrier is painted semi-gloss black and held in place by the V-shaped reinforcement tracking......

Should the entire outer surface be painted on both parts? Is the paint only on the tub part and not the lid? OR should there be any paint at all? Very confusing description at least to me. What should be what?

Also, any chance that there would be some factory overspray of the undercoating on the sides of the tub portion? Thanks.

That sentence (if quoted correctly) should read "The carrier/BRACE is painted semi-gloss black and held in place by the V-shaped reinforcement bracing assembly that is constructed of two steel angle bars that are welded to the stamped latch. It is riveted to the spare tire carrier with 3 flat head aluminum 3/16" diameter rivets on each bar"..rivets remain unpainted.
Only the V-shaped carrier brace is painted semi-gloss black.

Leif, I always thought that the whole this was kept natural fiberglass. In fact I was just stripping off the black that a previous owner has put on it when I decided to check the manual. I guess this is one of the reasons there is a 7th edition. Here is the actual page.

        Garry,
The fiberglass carrier and lid ARE natural fiberglass. Only the V-brace, angle iron is painted. And, the rivets holding the V-brace to the fiberglass carrier are unpainted.

Having judged Leif's car twice, he is correct, and we don't typically see overspray on the tub and carrier.

Thanks Jerry. Mine has a May 2, 1967 inside it. The interior of my tub is fine and original, but somebody before me decided that the entire outer tub and lid should be painted black. I have the lid done and working on paint stripper coat #3 on the tub. I use a very mild citrus based stripper and it works, it just takes time. It's all coming off and looking good.

Not that you need any more pictures, but I had these and thought I would post them up. I think you have everything you need.

Thanks Leif. Did you put a coating on the tub? It looks very shiny.

I did not. I'm pretty anal about cleaning. The entire chassis gets a complete detail twice a year during oil service because I do drive her quite a bit (6000 miles per year).

Thank you Mark. Living in Texas affords year round driving and I certainly take advantage of it.
