Question for Terry McManmon on Vacuum Line Tape

    Terry,

I have been looking at your pictures of the filament tape on your vacuum line fittings in the following thread:

In the 6th Edition of the Judging Guide in Fig. M.25.4 it shows a black vinyl covering over the filament tape. It is stated that some 1970's had this black vinyl covering in the Judging Guide. I was wondering if your car had this black vinyl covering when it was new. Your car was built on Jan. 29. 1970, and mine was built on Feb. 4, 1970, so I would expect my car was done similar to yours at the factory.

    Thanks,
    Allen

I have just now returned from the Florida Regional. I searched my photo files for an image of the T you asked about without success. My 1970 is stored some 80+ miles away. I will attempt to get a photo later this week, but I have some pressing issues that will keep me nearer home until Friday. I will do my best to help as soon as I can.

I have a 1970 and it was produced roughly 30 days after yours. Is the filament tape you speak of white like in the picture below? None of mine has any black vinyl coverings.

Most of that tape on mine is peeling as you see. Could that be a source for vacuum leaks?

        Terry,

There is no big hurry. I am going to go ahead and put the clear filament tape on the fittings, and I can add the black vinyl if you find any.

        Thanks,
        Allen

          Keith,

Thank you very much for the reply. I have never seen the black vinyl tape over the clear filament, but the judging guide says some cars have it. At this point, I am not putting any of the black vinyl tape on my car unless Terry finds some on his.

          Thanks,
          Allen

Good photo Keith. Well done. i too would like to know which T is under investigation. I believe it is one nearer the edge of the hood opening, but I am not sure. Allen's photo is too close-up for me to be sure.

That filament tape, I believe, is mostly to hold objects in position while the harness is transported and before installation. It serves little purpose after the harness is installed. On the other hand the black tape Allen inquired could help reduce vacuum leaks.
