spark plug shielding 1965 fuelie

Hey guys, At a recent NCRS event i received a deduct for non magnetic spark plug shielding on the drivers side. Passenger side is magnetic. I inquired with some one who should know and was told that is correct? Magnetic on one side non magnetic on the other?
Doesn't seem right to me? anyone know if this true? If both are to be magnetic does anyone know where i can drivers side shielding.

I just did a quick search into archives for previous questions on this and only found one pertinent thread here - https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...aterial+shield

the last post by Jeff Smith says. - There are at least a dozen stainless steel grades that are strongly ferro-magnetic -- one of which is 430. The olde "if it's non-magnetic = stainless" is a fable.

LH horizontal front & rear pieces AND the 'skirt' section of distributor cover are indeed stainless & in 430. Note, however, that the 'top' section of an original distributor cover is non-magnetic grade 304 stainless. ALL other components (i.e. RH horizontal, both verticals, both 'boomerangs') are of low carbon/mild steel construction with a cheapo plating.
Response is for original stuff, not reproductions.

You could ask the repro vendors to check their rounded spark plug shield pieces (driver's side) if they hold a magnet. Or else look to the used original parts vendors for OEM/ NOS parts.

Don,
I saw that post but I am a little confused. O don't what those numbers mean? Is Jeff saying that the left side is non magnetic?

Bruce, I posted in the other thread and yes one side in non-magnetic. Also, there should be no deduction on the magnetic question. The judge is not suppose to touch your car. If he can't touch the car, how would he know. This is grounds for an escalation to the judging chairman of the event.

Harry, I really appreciate your input! Somewhere I heard that judges are not to be using magnets? Is that true?

Correct, they are not suppose to touch your car.

We are not trying to fool judges, just following the rules, we as judges must follow. For years, the word "appears" has been adopted in judging.
