    1975 Corvette A.I.R.(smog)Pump Usage...

I'm having a discussion with another gentleman online about 1975 Corvettes and A.I.R. pumps. I thought, or it was my belief that ALL 1975 Corvettes regardless of engine/transmission usage came with a smog pump. Every 1975 "emission certification" label that I have seen on a '75 says "AIR" "EFE" "EGR" & "OC EXHAUST". For over 30yrs looking at mostly '74/'75 Corvettes and have probably seen many hundreds of '75 Corvettes, most of them being L-48 automatic because they only made 2372 L-82 cars, EVERY one of them had a smog pump OR there was evidence there was one there at one time. Of course I'm not talking about modded cars with crate engines & such, but cars as they were equipped from GM.
I have a Federal Emission '74 L-48 automatic that it's emission label says "EGR" & "CCS". It does not have a smog pump. The gentleman that I am talking with said that a generic label, such as the '75 label listing "AIR" as emission equipment DOES NOT mean every '75 had a smog pump. He even directed me to a page in the 2nd edition '75-'77 JG that does state L-48/automatic cars '75-'77 DID NOT receive a smog pump. Just even googling or searching pics on yahoo reveals many, many 1975 Corvettes with L-48 automatic with smog pumps. So I guess all these people are just adding an A.I.R. pump to their cars when supposedly they didn't come with one from GM????? I also believed that '68, '69, '73 & '75 were four years that ALL Corvettes of those years came with a smog pump. At one time someone here, think it was Joe Lucia published a list of '66 to 1982 Corvettes that came with smog. I did print the list off at one time, just haven't located it yet. Paul Borowski, Massillon, Oh(guess I also could hop over to Bill Hodel's house and ask him?)

    A.I.R. PUMP USEAGE (C2, C3, & C4)

Here is a listing that was posted on the NCRS Forum by Joe Lucia....

1966 CA-delivered Corvettes, except for the L-72, used the A.I.R. (RPO K-19) system

    1967 CA-delivered Corvettes, used the A.I.R. (RPO K-19) system.

1968 & 1969, ALL Corvettes used the A.I.R. system regardless of engine, transmission, or where delivered.

1970, Chevrolet went to the CCS (Controlled Combustion System) for emissions control on most Corvettes, except the LT-1s.

1971, Corvettes continued to use CCS (except LT-1s and LS-6s).

1972, A.I.R. system returned for most Corvettes except engines except L48s with the "CKW" and "CKX" code.

1973 - 1975, all Corvettes used A.I.R, except for the 1974 L48 with automatic and Federal emissions which used CCS.

1976, all Corvettes returned to CCS, except California-certified cars which used A.I.R.

1977, all Corvettes used CCS, except California and "High Altitude" delivered cars which used A.I.R.

1978 & 1979 all Corvettes used CCS, except California cars, "high altitude" and all L-82s which used A.I.R. L-82s were not available in California or "high altitude" areas during these years.

    1980 - 1987, all Corvettes used A.I.R.

1988 - on, A.I.R. was used on most, if not all Corvettes, although many C4s use an electric air pump.

      Re: 1975 Corvette A.I.R.(smog)Pump Usage...

      Hello Paul,

The 2nd edition of the '75-'77 TIM&JG is in error with respect to A.I.R. pump usage. A.I.R. pump usage has been corrected in the soon to be released 3rd edition, a relevant portion of which is attached.

Based upon the diligent research performed by the 3rd edition revision team of the 1975 cars it has been determined that ALL 1975 Corvettes were equipped with the A.I.R. pump system, regardless of engine/transmission combination.

      Thank you,

        Re: 1975 Corvette A.I.R.(smog)Pump Usage...

Thank you, exactly what I was looking for. The two years also that I've looked at extensively is also '76 & '77. I've seen most L-82 cars of these years that had the smog pump and I know they weren't CA cars or "high altitude" cars. Also have seen quite a few '76 & '77 L-48 4spd cars, like the '74 & '75s that have had a smog pump that I'm sure weren't CA or high "altitude" cars. I've seen quite a few '76 & '77 L-48 automatic cars that did not have a smog pump, which is correct per the list. The new JG revision for the 3rd JG for '75-'77 also says '76-'77 A.I.R. was installed on ALL 4spd cars, so this list above needs revised.

Thank you. Is your '75 L-82 roadster in my '75 L-82 Survey? Have over I think 188 cars in it now. Ironic some people lately that have purchased a '75 L-82 have contacted me with their info on their car and several times the previous owner had it listed with me and it was already in my survey. Small world!!!

I have re-confirmed that all 1975 Corvettes, regardless of engine, transmission or 49 state/California emissions certification were equipped with an AIR system.

Another curious fact: the 1975 AIR pump was unique to that year. Its configuration was the same as the other 1972-78 AIR pumps but it has a unique part number: GM #7817575. It was discontinued from SERVICE in February, 1976 and replaced by GM #7817809.

Attached are photos of an NOS GM #7817575.

                  Hi Joe,
Is there a date code stamped on the pump?

                      Thanks Joe,
Reason I asked is that I see there is a NOS pump listed (as a 1974 pump)for sale on eBay. Part number is 7817575. Date code is 008141S. 81st. day of 74. So, then couldnt this pump be used on a 74 Corvette? Therefore not making the part number unique to 75? Just curious.

It's possible the 7817575 was also used for 1974 but it was never specified by GM for any 1974 Chevrolet application. These pumps were used across all GM car and truck lines so it's more possible it was used in 1974 for one of those applications.
