Gary, it is my understanding that the lifters get damaged when they are "deactivated", I.E. not pumped up with oil pressure and riding on the big spring. Maybe the spring doesn't keep enough tension on the pushrod in some circumstances and causes them to get bent. That said, I hope that by not allowing them to deactivate, I run less risk of valvetrain damage. I also have some concern over possible damage I may be doing by never allowing them to deactivate. Hopefully would never find out if I leave the Range unit in place. My dealer is well aware of the Range unit and deals with it during service visits I am told. I have not had it back in for service yet, though. I, too, have read that GM has eliminated that feature due to the chip shortage. I wonder if they are doing it electronically as the Range unit does or if the engines are different as in lifters, pushrods, and the oil pressure by pass plate under the plenum. I have seen the "kits" to eliminate the feature that include lifters, pushrods and that plate.

Me too. If it's a mechanical issue/defective lifters or solenoid or springs, shutting down the signal to the solenoid won't fix the metal pieces.

Paul, I understand your explanation, but the Range device was initially designed to stop the hunting and odd driveability feel. It took me a while to get used to that odd effect in my '20 Sierra AT4 6.2L 10 Speed.

To me, I'm thinking if there's a design flaw, and they extend PT Warranty out 10 years, by using the Range device, will that prolong the failure mode on a ticking time bomb out beyond PT Extended Warranty time?

If my 6.2 is going to blow up, I want it to happen sooner than later. This will likely be a keeper for me at my stage in life.

What’s to say the repair doesn’t just reset the time bomb clock to zero? Does the repair fix the problem or create an opportunity for a new one?

                Paul,

Thanks for the info. Bought a Range yesterday at Summit Racing for my 2017 Silverado.

Suspect that GM omitted the DFM controller installation and the DFM engine parts are still in the engine.

My buddies 2016 Denali had this same issue and it cost him $1600 to get his engine fixed. He then traded it in on a new Navigator. As soon I as I heard about the Ranger I bought one for my 2018 Denali and it doesn't not impact fuel mileage. I'm very happy with it.

This is a common problem on AFM vehicles Camshaft and lifter wear. I do extended Warranty inspections and i see it every week. Myself I like to stay away from purchasing vehicles with AFM. And yes we had nothing but trouble with it back in the era 1981 CADILLACS 8 6 4

i installed the range deactivator on both my silverado 5.3's.simple installation, about 100 bucks apiece. seems to me its a decent insurance policy. the 2017 5.3 has 32K miles, the 2018 5.3 has 22K miles. hopefully the mechanical damage hasn't occurred yet. mike

This is disturbing news to hear. I am sure the 30 MPG my 2021 Corvette gets is due to this technology, I do hope they get it sorted out.

The Tahoe is repaired. New lifters, push rods and lifter guides. Extended warranty to 100000 on driveline. Dealer said they cannot install the engine idle stop delete. We'll see what the aftermarket options are. I want to run it awhile with the cylinder deactivation to see if the problem comes back.

Mark did dealer say anything about updated parts. Or say a reason for failure?

I assume you bought those a while back at $100?...twice that now from what I see ($208). I'm thinking I should get one for my Silverado.

I got generic deactivaters, brand name is Qazcar. they were about 100 each. one works, one doesn't. I'm sending the inoperative one back and getting the 200 buck Range deactivator, as supplies of the Qzacar brand are exhausted on amazon and ebay. mike mccagh
