In my collection of alternator braces and generator braces I believe that the original brace in the photo below is for 1964 Corvettes with A.C. made before May 1964. The 1964 Corvette AIM (Sect. C60, Sheet C2.00) was redrawn on May 5, 1964, as shown in the revision record with GM # 3854028 listed as the alternator brace. My 1964 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (Oct. 1963) in Gr. 2.317 lists GM # 3846863 as the brace part number for the 64 Corvette with Air. Cond. (exc. Sp. H/Per.). GM # 3864863 was replaced by GM # 3854028 in May 1964 for service parts as per Chevrolet Parts History. I have to assume that brace # 3846863 was originally used on 1964 Corvettes w/AC (exc. S.H.P.).
The 1964 Chevrolet Parts Catalog(Oct. 1963) lists the following dimensions for the 3846863 brace:
Length = 12 1/8", Slot = 3 3/4", Offset = 1/4", Shape = curved
My 1965 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (May 1965) lists the following dimensions for the 3854028 brace:
Length = 12 1/16", Slot = 2 7/32", Offset = 1/4", Shape = curved
The brace in my photo has a slot length of 3 3/4" and a measured offset of 1/4". I never really figured out the length dimensions as shown in the parts catalogs. Maybe it's the distance from the center of the mounting hole to the theoretical spot on the slot when the fan belt is installed properly.
The Corvette vendors selling reproduction parts only list the 3854028 brace for 1964-1965 Corvettes w/A.C. (exc. S.H.P.).
I would appreciate comments from 1964 Corvette owners that have A.C. and have the ORIGINAL alternator brace.
NOTE: the brace in the photo below is very similar to the 3884640 brace used on 1966-1967 Corvettes w/327 (exc. S.H.P.), however, the "straight section" on the 3884640 brace is a bit longer. I have a drawing of the 3884640 brace in another recent post.
