    1966 Assembly Line Photo Questions

This pic was recently posted in the muffler black-out thread. A few questions about what I see and don't see:

    • Why is there a drip pan below the gas tank overflow hose?
    • Where is the tank sticker?
    • What is the purpose of the rod assembly stuck into the muffler outlets?

I can answer the last question. That rod is to keep the exhaust pipes aligned so when the tips are installed they are centered, or close to centered, in the opening on the valance.

It is also important to keep in mind that these photos are not candid shots. That is to say, they are "posed" and what you see (clean floors, workers in clean clothes, etc.) are not necessarily representative of typical factory conditions. Does that cleaned up and posed situation extend to the car(s) in the picture? I can't tell you, but John Z can.

    BTW: Great observation skills Owen.

No tank sticker until '67, this is a 65 or 66.

I think the hose from the filler to the tray is when they put fuel in the tank if any fuel splash it would go down the hose to the tray , avoid gas spill on floor , if you look at the rear right very blurry look like a tank sticker , the bar in muffler who knows there must be a reason going down the line .they use it for something

The bar in the mufflers are to hold them inward toward the center of the chassis so that the mufflers clear the rear quarter panels as the body is dropped.

It's a '66 coupe. No vent grille on the hinge pillar just forward of the rear window and that's a '66 vertical script style rear emblem visible on the convertible. '66 had no tank sticker. Sure wish mine had one! I've heard that VERY late production '66 Corvettes may have had them on their tanks but not sure if this was just a rumor. Mike

So tank stickers were not implemented until, practically speaking, '67 and onward? I did not know that and assumed it was for all of the mid-years.

I think that pan under the rear of the car is not a drip pan. I think it holds fasteners used at this station. The convertible in front of this car has no drip pan and the cars are some distance before the "first start" station where gas would be put in the tank.

Here are some zoomed-in images of the tank & tray... it appears there's a second hose going into the fuel tank filler neck:

It looks to me that it is not a tray but a cardboard box. Also, look at what appears to be a bin full of fasteners in the background.

Thanks to Jack's enlarged photo I just noticed the chrome bumpers hanging behind the guy's knee. That large bin of bolts must be bumper or body mount bolts. The convertible has it's rear bumpers installed now. Man, those guys were hustling!

This is the best I could do with enlarging the bin of bolts:

Hey, wait a minute! Those are obviously not original since they don't have the anchor/delta/SBC head marks like they should!
