1963 Muncie Tag?

The 1963 T10's had a small tag attached under a side cover bolt. The tag had a two letter code indicating ratio. Just like '62's. Did the new for '63 Muncie have a tag attached under a side cover bolt? If so can someone provide a photo?

Subsequent model year Muncie's had a tag with the transmission assembly part number.

Harry Sadlock has previously provided an example of a '63 T10 tag.

There is a tag on my late May 63 Muncie.. It reads 3831706

Looks like there was a change from '62 and early '63 in the information stamped in the tag. Is it 7 digits like a part number ending with a W? The W likely representing Warner Gear.

The Muncie Ident. tag #3848378 and the Ident. notation on this tag was revised on 4-10-63. Like the T-10 tag it was attached to the lower front trans side cover bolt. I am curious about the tags shown. Are they originals and what does the Muncie tag #3831706 represent?

Your question regarding these tags being original is valid.

I could not find the number 3831706 in the '63, '64 or later parts books. So I have to wonder if it is a production line only part number. Possibly because the production line transmission was supplied with a speedo gear to accommodate the various rear gear ratios. Requiring more than one part number for the two 4 speed transmissions. Again I assume a service transmission would not have a speedo gear and only require two part numbers for close and wide ratio transmissions. Which is what I found in the parts books.

I did find pat number 3831705. If I remember correctly it was a side cover gasket. Point being these parts were in the same part number release.

Of note I do not have the spring of '63 release parts book just the October '62 edition which would not carry a Muncie part number.

I should have but have not checked the 1963 AIM yet.

This supports the part numbers for the new Muncie being all from the same part number release.

Transmission & Extension Assembly chart #3831700 revised 6-21-63 shows there were 11 different Muncie 4 spd. assembly numbers wide & close ratio. With the exception of the speedometer drive gear #3708144 installed in #3831815 (a good #) it is exactly the same close ratio as #3831701 (also a good #) that has #3708145 speedometer drive gear installed.
#3831706 is not listed.
