This is a one on me, so I'll ask for opinions. Just cleaning up a set of rear drums I pulled off of a 64 15 years ago. They are 3828688. The strange this is one is stamped L and one is stamped R. Opinions...
Harry I am not sure why they are marked left and right
But back in the day when I was a kid working in the Auto Parts store I machined hundreds of drums and rotors
The mechanics always marked them left and right so they would be returned to their original position

I had read that the std and J65 drums were the same casting number, but they were listed with a different part number VS the standard drums due to a finer surface finish being required for seating Metallic shoes? I had been doing a bit of research because a customer recently picked up a 64 metallic brake car which was owned purchased new by a GM engineer, Frank Kostiuk and I was curious. .
