The plug was natural steel but, as previously mentioned, it was painted with the engine so its finish is unimportant-----one could use either finish and no one would know the difference.

The plug was 3/8-18 NPT with an external square drive head. It was GM #445686 which was discontinued in June, 1994 and replaced by GM #14090911 The latter remains available from GM but it is an internal square drive head.

No matter, though. A plug virtually identical to the original can be obtained from good hardware stores or sources like McMaster-Carr. As I mentioned, the type of finish is unimportant.

Paul and Joe thanks for your answers.
The reason I ask is that in my AMI the plug is installed together with the fuel pump.
        I found this old thread.

I'm sorry. I was correct in the old post and incorrect in my response in this thread. I must be getting dumber and "losing it" as time goes on. Anyway, the plug was installed at St. Louis (and, this should have been obvious to me since the pushrod and fuel pump were installed at St. Louis).

The original plug, GM #445673, was discontinued in September, 1974 and replaced by the GM #445686 which I mentioned in my previous response. Both were natural finish. However, it's possible that the 445673 was cast iron while the 445686 was steel. There is a slight difference in the appearance between the two materials. Of course, both will rust in short order and will then have nearly identical appearance.

445673 was cast iron 445686 was steel, as stated both 3/8 - 18 NPTF plain. Their length was .525 thread & .335 max. head height

              Joe.
              Thanks for the information.
It is human to forget or to make mistakes.

              David.
I have measured my plug and it matches the measurements you specified. Thanks
Headmarking is "L" on my plug

I will try to paint my engine next week.
