    1964 Ignition Coil Question

Was the 1115115 ignition coil (stamped "115") a 1964 Corvette production line coil?

The 1115115 ignition coil is listed for 1964 Chevelle & Chevrolet models with 250 and 300 HP engines as well as 1964 Chevy II models with the 283 engine according to the AMA Specifications. No ignition coil number is shown in the 1964 Corvette AMA Specifications. The 1115115 coil is not listed in my 63, 64, 65, 66 67, 68, and 69 Chevrolet parts catalogs (Gr. 2.170).

    Re: 1964 Ignition Coil Question

It's my understanding that '64 Corvette coil/ballast utilization carried over from late '63... 087/1.8 ohm for 250/300 HP engines and 091/0.3 ohm for SHP/FI. For '65 all Corvette engines with single point ignition systems were ...202/1/8.

What does the '64 Corvette AIM show for coil utililzation?

      Duke,
As stated previously, "No ignition coil number is shown in the 1964 Corvette AMA Specifications" as the specifications seem to be incomplete.
I find it hard too believe that if the 1964 Chevrolet, Chevelle, and Chevy II were issued the 1115115 ignition coil then I would think that the 1964 low HP models would have been issued the 1115115 as well. These "115" coils seem to be quite rare.

        Dave,

Yes strange the 1964 Corvette AMA spec doesn't show it. I just spent time looking also. Much detail is missing.

But.... Duke was asking about what the 1964 AIM calls for.

I just looked. The base engine, Sec 6 Sheet B3, Item 24 shows Coil is 1115087.

          Rich and Duke,
My eyes saw "AMA" instead of "AIM" in Duke's post. I guess I am older than I think. I never thought to look in the assembly manuals.
My 1964 Chevelle and 1964 Chevrolet assembly manuals list GM # 1115115 as the coil in Section 6.
          Thanks to both of you.

I can't find that the 1115115 was ever available in SERVICE.

Some of these coils were supplied to PRODUCTION as an assembly with the bracket. In these cases, the 3 digit number stamped on the coil was the last 3 digits of the coil+bracket ASSEMBLY. This assembly was never available in SERVICE.

Do your Chevelle and passenger car AIM's show separate part numbers for the coil and bracket or is there just one number shown?

              Joe,
There is no question in my mind that the 1115115 coil was never a service coil.
GM # 1115115 is listed as the COIL ASM. in both the 1964 Chevelle and 1964 Chevrolet Assembly Manuals. There is not a part number for the coil bracket. The 1964 Corvette Assembly Manual lists the COIL ASM. as GM #1115087 and the coil BRACKET ASM. as GM # 3826072 but in this case the bracket asm. served two purposes (attaches the coil as well as 4 spark plug wires with a grommet).

So, as I suspected, the 1115115 was an assembly of the 1115087 coil + 3826072 bracket. I've never figured out why they embossed the coil with a derivative of the assembly part number.

                  Joe,
My 1964 Chevelle Assembly Manual lists the COIL ASM. 1115087 for the L76 option (Sect. L76, Sheet 3.00). This agrees the the 1964 Chevelle AMA Specifications. There is no part number listed for the bracket in this assembly manual.

In the Chevelle application the bracket was likely supplied as part of the engine assembly. Some coil brackets were so-supplied. In some cases (like 1964 Corvette), the bracket was supplied separately and installed at St. Louis. In either of those cases, the coil was installed separately at the vehicle assembly plant and carried the 3 digit derivative of the coil part number (in this case "087").

There were actually 8 "stablemates" of the 1115115 coil assembly. These were 1115110, 1115111, 1115112, 1115113, 1115114, 1115116, 1115117, 1115118, 1115119, and 1115120. I suspect these were all coil assembly+bracket for different applications, some likely non-Chevrolet GM vehicles. All were SERVICED by the 1115087 coil. In addition, there's no way there were all actual different coils of the 1115110 through 1115120 series.
