"Service active handling soon" message, C5

I periodically get this message on the DIC of my 2002. What does it mean? What is involved? Do I have to take it to a Chev dealership?

Wayne the best way to start this is to get someone that has a code reader and see what it says. sometimes the discount auto parts stores will do this for free. If you have a local mechanic you use he will likely be able to do in a heart beat.
